The 1986 Rob Reiner directed classic Stand By Me is the story of four boys who go on a search for a dead body in the wilderness outside of their town. This movie is based on Stephen King's novella '’The Body,' and was written as a memoir from the perspective of one of the four boys and is narrated by Richard Dreyfuss. This film takes place near the town of Castle Rock, Oregon over the course of two days in the summer of 1959. This movie does a wonderful job of making you feel as though you are there with the boys on their journey both physically and emotionally with the acting and camera angles. This movie also does a wonderful job of capturing the nostalgic moments of the coming of age life changing experiences afterwards because of those …show more content…
It is easy to pick up that the director carefully picked the outfits of the actors so that they matched the personality of the actors, which helped to make the persona of the characters more transparent. A perfect example of this is the outfit Chris Chambers wore throughout the movie; blue jeans and a white tee. A textile symbol of the bad boy stigma that engulfed young male culture in the 1950’s. The outfit meshed well with Chris and his brash personality. While it is clear the personalities of the boys almost immediately, Rob Reiner does a great job with his use of camera angles and lighting to give the audience a deeper feeling of understanding towards each character. There is a scene where the boys are camping out for the night surrounded by the campfire and sharing their most random, deepest thoughts which nearly everyone can relate to. Reiner’s use of camera work is great in this film as well especially in his use of symbolism. For example, when the boys start their journey and he begins the camera angled at where the railroad diverges in two different directions, he does that to symbolize the change that the boys would go through after their journey …show more content…
This movie is based on Stephen King's novella ''The Body,' and Richard Dreyfuss did a great job narrating this film. This film was absolutely worthwhile and brought me back to some of my greatest memories growing up with my friends. This movie does a wonderful job of making you feel as though you are there with the boys on their journey both physically and emotionally with the acting and camera angles. This movie also does a wonderful job of capturing the nostalgic moments of the coming of age life changing experiences afterwards because of those experiences. The narration captured some of the simplest yet most important ideas of the movies such as at the end after all the boys head home and end up going different directions in life, Richard Dreyfuss said “friends come in and out of your life like bus boys at a restaurant” and then ends the movie warmly after writing the last sentence in his memoir “I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was

    T. Coraghessan Boyle’s short story, “Greasy Lake,” is a work of fiction that is meant to display the absurdities of the American teenage experience. Published in 1985, Boyle is quick to contextualize the work within an 80s teenager’s frame of reference; he opens the story with a lyric from a Bruce Springsteen song, “Sprit of the Night,” which acts as Boyle’s first symbol in the story, a tribute to the teenagers of the decade in which the story is published. But, from the content, it can be surmised that the story takes place near the time of the Vietnam War, so Boyle’s appeal to 80s rock culture makes the work symbolic, meant to encapsulate the teenage male spirit. Through a series of symbols, Boyle’s story both depicts and satirizes the teenage American male ethos. Boyle’s language often contains metaphors that entrench the reader deeper in the…

A dry, withered part of the world, for the most part, is established by the film’s mise-en-scene in Hell or High Water. From the dull colors of the cars and houses to the sea of lifeless yellow grass, it’s apparent the interactions between people, contrasted with the monotonous setting, are highlighted as an integral way the mise-en-scene reveals the characters. With the setting emphasizing their isolation, the mise-en-scene invites the viewer to empathize with the hardships the characters face throughout the movie. Although much can be inferred through the established setting, a telling theme of the movie can be derived from the costumes of a few characters - poverty and its effect on people. The mise-en-scene of Hell or High Water functions as a great source of information on the film’s characters, themes, and intended influence on the emotions of the audience.…

The film made me think about some difficult events and traumas I went through my childhood and how they have affected me growing up. The scene where Ana and her sisters were reenacting possibly an event where their parents argued stood out to me because as a child we tend to remember when our parents have discussions. I do not know why, but those events follow us through our childhood and that scene was cute, but at the same time sad because Ana and her sisters represent the theme of death, but specifically of emotional death. I can feel Ana trying to numb the pain, but she cannot forget the past and I can relate to that because as human beings sometimes we cannot erase a horrifying or impactful event that we experienced as a child. Overall, I enjoyed the film because I was able to make a personal connection to the story and Ana.…
