Surrounded by guns, drug deals, and unstable households leaves lost and undetermined kids. In this compelling movie, Freedom Writers the main Character Erin Gruwell(Hilary Swank) sees potential in grieving students when everyone else has lost hope in them. Long Beach, California is central for violence, drugs, and alcohol. For these students all they have known is love through gangs and rough households. Underneath the tough constructed attitude lies innocent kids who have lost faith in themselves.

The Film shows a positive outlook on inner city kids who are struggling to find their way. The beginning of the film depicts the true violence of the school by having a school shooting occur. The Film shows many graphic and intense scenes but it portrays the correct image of what these students go through. The film also showed positive companionship through a mix of races and a need to succeed. It showed a great comparison between Anne Frank and the students and helped relate to them. I liked Erin`s character in the way she had faith in her students and wouldn’t let negativity bring her down. Erin`s character has determination when nobody else does. For some of her students she is the first true role model for them. The film also lacks in certain aspects. Erin`s character is portrayed as weak and nieve in the beginning of the film. She walks in and thinks that the students care about being there when in reality they don`t. The film also shows unrealistic scenes such as Erin working three jobs to support her students. Although that is generous, working three jobs is not realistic. Another unrealistic scene is when the class flys the women that hid Anne Frank during the Holocaust down to speak to the class. That is very admiring and a good dramatic effect to the film, but also lacks realistic

The vast majority of the cast is African-American, and they are represented in a variety of ways. The counselor in the school, the security officer, and the friendly bus driver are some of the roles of black people that are seen in a positive light other than the stereotypical “thug.” It depicts Inglewood as a community rather than a warzone. While the film also features several black criminals, the wider representation and visual style helps the film keep the reality of the problems of crime in black communities without depicting crime as the staple of a black community.…
