Long Walk Home

Children tend to choose a certain person in their life or a character to be their role model. As they grow older their views change and things happen in their life that they change who they want their role model to be. A lot of people choose their mothers or a certain person or character that has achieved a lot in life and stand for a specific cause to be their new role model. Films that have been viewed in class that have good strong female role models are: alone yet not alone, gone with the wind, places in the heart, the long walk home, the Harvey girls, and iron jawed angles.

Through its two main female characters it shows qualities that many people place high value on. First there is Odessa who is hard working, determined, forgiving, understanding, kind, strong, and classy. Secondly there is Miriam who is determined to help Odessa and disobeys her husband to do what is right. Odessa is an African American during the time of the civil rights movement. She has to go through many obstacles and walks ten miles to get to work during the bus boycott. One night she came home with bloody feet and her son wanted his father to till her to stay him but his dad know she wanted listen and would go anyway. Odessa husband even told her she could ride the bus but she said she that she was not giving up on her cause. At the beginning Odessa was treated badly by a right policemen in front of Maryjane and her friends but she stood tall and did not let it show that it upset it. During Christmas dinner Mr. Thompson’s mother insulted the African Americans and did not realize Odessa was in the room. Instead of defending her people she said nothing and kept doing her job. The other maid said if she was in their when she said it she would have thrown the plate of rolls at her. At the end of the film at the car pool the viewer see Odessa standing in a middle of a line standing her ground. Miriam is also there. Miriam is a southern house wife who is the boss of Odessa. At the begging when Odessa is kicked out of the park with Maryjane, Miriam makes the officer apologize to Odessa. Also when Miriam finds out that Odessa is walking to work she tells Odessa that she well give her a ride two mornings of the week. When her husband finds out he makes her tell Odessa that she has to work. After Odessa makes it to work she asked Miriam why she cannot pick her up any more. Miriam told Odessa that her husband found out and that is why she cannot bring her any more. They then
