The bus ride back home was much different than the bus ride there. All players were happily singing songs and enjoying each others company. Yet, when they got back to their town they went back to a place of division between the blacks and whites. On the first day of school the players are welcomed back with riots against black students attending the school. Gerry introduces his girlfriend to Julian and she refuses to shake his hand and walks away. The Titans were finally a team but everyone around them still seemed to disapprove of their new team relationship. After their first game win they all went out to celebrate as a team. Gerry 's friends showed up out and tried to convince him to ditch them and go party with them. This was an important scene because Gerry had to decide whether to go along with his friends who were disapproving of his black team members. He decides to stick with his teammates. The same night one of the other white players invites all of them out to go celebrate at a restaurant. The restaurant owner refuses to let the team eat because of the black players. This in turn causes anger with the black players. Coming back to the town strains the teams relationship. The players families and friends are not accepting of their integrating relationships. The coaches also come to a disagreement on how to coach the boys. The team members call a meeting and decide that they are going to stick together regardless of all the disapproval around
