Response Letter To Spelman

To the Members of the Portfolio Committee, When I came to Spelman, I was an English major who lacked confidence in my writing and my intelligence at times. I knew the basics of writing, but not the dynamics. I could write a wonderful essay, but it would lack emotion and true depth. Spelman helped to change my confidence and made me the writer I am today. Reflecting back on my senior year, I was hesitant to become an English major. I have a true love and passion for the language, but my writing wasn’t as strong as I would like it to be. I was nervous to take a college level English class because I thought my writing wouldn’t be up to par. In retrospect, I can honestly say this lack of confidence was dumb and created obstacles that could have …show more content…
But now I know that if you write like you care, the reader will have no choice but to feel the same. I have learned to set the tone in my writing by thoroughly researching and making my position clear. I have also learned the importance of planning. Countless teachers have told me that my writing feels rushed and sometimes my ideas aren’t clear. Spelman professors have taught me to find planning methods that best fit me. Personally, outlining has been the best option and I can see the difference in my writing. Section B is a great example of how planning has improved my writing. Section B is entitled “Clear and Crisp: Lines Reveal America’s not so secret views”. This was the first writing assignment that I outlined the entire paper and mapped out every idea. This not only saved me time, but it allowed me to get every idea out clearly and have a concise thesis and theme. I selected this essay for Section B because it was a turning point in my writing. Personally, I think this “Clear and Crisp…” is my writing’s magnum opus. For Section C, I selected an essay entitled “Marxism and Black Citizens”. I decided to include this essay because I was able to set a clear stance and make an argument that stayed consistent throughout my

When I began English Composition One, I was a mediocre writer; however, this semester has unlocked my inner William Faulkner. I made a lot of careless mistakes in the form of writing, but that soon changed because my teacher really unlocked my potential and changed my confidence as a writer. I lacked organization, details, and consistency especially in my introductions. My introductions were stale and choppy, and if the subject was difficult, my introductions were vague. My writings were poor, but I have persevered and became an entirly different writer.…

Going into college, I was very nervous about taking this class. Throughout high school, I excelled in math and science, but I always struggled in reading and writing. The most challenging part for me, then and now, is reaching the length limit for papers; my writing style is very condensed and it is incredibly difficult for me to expand my ideas to a specific length. While writing the first paper, I struggled with meeting the length requirement because I was writing about something I wasn’t passionate about. But to my surprise, the second and third paper were much easier to write, and much easier to reach the length requirement.…

All the articles were really interesting and I was happy to express my opinion in the forum. They were connected to our current project, in this case to a narrative essay. I believe that a narrative essay is a great start for a first English course; you just have to narrate a story following the instructions at The Owl at Purdue and the book ‘The Curious Writer’. Our second project at English 101 was a profile essay. In this type of essay, I had to make a description of a specific person.…

Reflection Paper The HLSC 1701U course focuses heavily on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, an APA writing manual for students and educators. Johnson guided the students on different aspects of the writing process like applicable in-text citations, proper formatting and maintaining academic integrity. At the beginning of the semester, I had a lot of anxiety over the impending course work, but now I can truthfully say, this is one of my easiest classes. The first challenge I faced during the applying process was passing the TOEFL test and the essay part of the application. Even though I scored the lowest on the writing part of the test, I managed to pass the test with a score higher than the required score and I was accepted to the college. What I am trying to say, writing in English wasn 't my strongest area. Not being as proficient as I wanted to be resulted in writing not being my favorite thing. I hated when I had to write an important email, a letter, or a paper for my class.…

With me asking questions about something that I don’t understand I am probably helping another student that is also lost and needing help. I feel that we all tried to help each other and learn what we needed to be better writers from this class. I hope my classmates feel that this class has improved them the way it has for me. I know that I will never be a great writer, I will always have problems with commas and run on sentences but that’s ok because I know who to call for help if I need it. Truthfully it’s the teacher that I had that made this a wonderful class for me.…
