Reflective Essay On Timed Writing

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home. I walked into the classroom of my last class of the day expecting to just take notes and listen to a lecture. Unfortunately for me, the teacher announced that we were going to write a timed essay based on a chapter of a book we were reading. This task did not seem challenging at first, and the thirty minutes we were given to write our essays seemed like plenty of time. Nonetheless, I still managed to turn what was supposed to …show more content…
Especially since, as I discovered not long after this experience, a timed essay is a part of the standardized tests I would need to take to get into college. Even though my first experience of writing a timed essay may not seem like the greatest, it was still beneficial. I was able to see that I needed to develop ideas quicker when writing, especially if I wanted to do well on the writing portion of a standardized test (on which I guess I did okay, but would have done much worse if I had not known what to expect). And although I am still not the greatest at timed writing, I hope to continue to improve my writing skills throughout my time at

The school had just gone off for winter break. I was excited to be free of homework for two weeks I thought to myself. As days past I would just relax by sleeping in more than I would usually and play video games with some friends and my cousins. Then Christmas came out of nowhere and I got to see relatives that I haven't seen for in years at my grandma's house that had been decorated with big old-fashioned Christmas lights.…

I have a true love and passion for the language, but my writing wasn’t as strong as I would like it to be. We would read then analyze various books through the year such as the Odyssey, Like Water for Chocolate, and Night by Elie Wiesel. After we finished analyzing the different books, we would write an essay expressing our thoughts of a particular viewpoint the author conveyed. We had then completed the book Things Fall Apart and were assigned to pick a meaningful quote from the book and write a 5-paragraph essay, which was due the next day. My teacher allotted us the entire ninety-minute of class to work on the essay that was due the next day under the condition that we were mostly silent. There were 32 other students in the class, which means even when the class was supposed to be silent there were always various noises.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

I believe that I have the potential to be a good writer, as I wrote a seven-page research paper on the way children are becoming more intelligent with the use of the internet, as they have the ability to look up an answer to a question they do not know anytime of the day. I had an easy time writing the paper because we went over everything that needed to be in it beginning with an attention grabbing thesis and ending with a powerful conclusion. I flew through writing the paper, which made me confident that I was going to get a good grade (and I did), it made me feel that I had improved my writing abilities. I also had to write an analytical paper comparing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to a modern day problem in society. It was more difficult to write compared to the research paper because I had to compare it to a difficult read.…

Surviving English Comp 1 Writing Class Writing is one thing I hate the most. It was hard to write an essay for the first time because I did not have the knowledge or concept of this writing style. Before this class, I thought I knew what writing was all about by expressing my thoughts, ideas and feeling. I know now that I had the wrong concept on how to write. I can express my thoughts, ideas and feeling, but if I put them in the wrong contents it does not lead the reader to the point of the essay.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

Experience of Timed Writing Obviously, considering my experience with timed writing or under pressure, I must admit that I used to pass through this challenge while applying for different purposes. For instance, taking the TSI (Texas Success Initiative) was very challenging for me even though I did great. It is important to show that timed writing occurs as extremely exhausting even though those assignment usually takes up to an hour; the focus here lies in arguing that timed writing incorporates the inquiry into the skills and knowledge of any office seeker or any position that someone’s interested in applying for. A strange thing is that the piece of writing that people submit should not necessarily be free of grammatical, punctuation as…

Writing is a 21st century skill that is essential to being successful in whatever post-secondary atmosphere students find themselves in. Writing an essay about my experience as a writer and how I feel when I write. I thought should be a breeze until, I received my grade back. It was not a horrible grade, nor what I was expecting. To be an essay, it must include an introduction paragraph that ends with a thesis/focus sentence, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.”…
