Why I Want To Attend Punahou Essay

Decent Essays
When asked to write about and describe myself I often have to stop and ask myself how would someone who knows me, describe me to someone who doesn’t know me at all. I feel unique would probably be the most fitting adjective for describing Robert Yamane.
I enjoy being challenged and never walk away from a problem that I know I can solve. Puzzles are great examples, but more importantly I want to be challenged in the classroom. Which is a huge reason why I want to attend Punahou. I personally think Punahou offers great one-on-one teaching so teachers can get to know me better, and more importantly I can learn at my own pace. I am a very fast learner and as soon as I understand something, all I have to do is commit the new information to memory and I will master it. I believe in a past life I may have kissed the blarney stone and I am learning the gift of gab can be both a blessing and a curse. I have gotten in trouble for being too social during class because I was tired of having to go over the same thing over and over again. I am confident that will not happen

Every time I hear somebody tell me something like that, it only makes me want to work harder at achieving my goals and making my dreams a reality. One of my biggest goals has been to be accepted into Punahou for my high school career. In order to make that happen I’ve known I needed to work on my writing skills in particular. As you may have expected I have worked on them at every opportunity I got. For the first time in forever, one of my essays I wrote for English impressed my English teacher so much that she decided to use it as an example for future classes. This was and still is a huge accomplishment to me and a huge flashing neon sign telling me I am getting better at this weakness of mine. But I am never satisfied, and I hope to get more help with my writing skills at

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

This semester in Dr. Meyer’s class I wrote and read a lot.…

To start off with I have grown immensely as a writer this year. When I started this course at the beginning of the year I had little to no writing experience. I have learned various literary skills and I’m actually very good at literature because of my previous years in English, but my background in basic English and grammar was severely lacking. To say the least I was a very unbalanced writer. Through this English 101 course I have not only grown as a writer in a technical sense but content wise as well.…

I feel that I should be selected as a district-level nominee because I genuinely believe I could add to the Communicative Arts section of the Governor’s Honors Program. I believe I would bring much to the program. Not only do I write above my grade level according to writing tests, I also thrive in group discussion. As can be read in my teacher’s nomination form, I can add much to the discussions that are a huge part of the Communicative Arts. In all the Language Arts classes I have taken, the same thing always happens.…

How can I be a better writer than before? That was my first question I had this semester. I didn’t feel that I can compare my writing with my other classmates who are all their native language is English, or at less lived their life speaking English. There was so much pressure that made me want to be not good enough, but also better than other students. Wherefore, the first time I met Mrs. Ivy, she was nice enough to made me excited about this class.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
