Surviving English Comp 1 Writing Class
Writing is one thing I hate the most. It was hard to write an essay for the first time because I did not have the knowledge or concept of this writing style. Before this class, I thought I knew what writing was all about by expressing my thoughts, ideas and feeling. I know now that I had the wrong concept on how to write. I can express my thoughts, ideas and feeling, but if I put them in the wrong contents it does not lead the reader to the point of the essay. I hope I learn to write a great essay before the end of this writing course.
I had been out of school for nearly forty two years and I believed I knew everything that I needed to know about writing. The first in class writing assignment showed me that I knew diddly-squat about writing, I never knew that there were so many different types of essay. The first essay I wrote was a bomb and opened my eyes to what is needed to write a really good essay. It helped when the teacher would group us into four or five and we would use the time for brainstorming or group discussion on different topic. We would use these topics of discussion to do our next essay. At first I thought this was time consuming, tedious and unnecessary; however, I soon

My confidence began to slowly melt into a large puddle of water. However, I hoped with my second in class writing assignment I had begun to understand the process of writing an essay. I passed the second in class assignment with a better grade that gave me hope that not all was lost. Nonetheless, I began to enjoy the days in the writing class. I have written three essays and in class writing assignments with improvement in each one that I wrote. This is the final essay for this semester, I am excited, curious and nervous at the same time when it is time to check the grades, but those feelings should not affect my confidence that I have finally written a great

I remember the first time I wrote an essay that was being graded at the college level. This was in my junior year when I took AP Language and Composition, our first essay was a rhetorical analysis essay from a very old excerpt that used old english and was very hard to read. When I first started reading the passage I started to get nervous because I didn't understand what the text was saying but then I started to annotate and the passage began to make sense. I found many rhetorical strategies that the author used and I then began to outline the essay in my head.…

I really enjoyed some of the writing technique essays that we read in class. I usually spend several hours doing just my rough draft. For some reason, I had never considered just doing word throw up on my paper to help develop my ideas. The first draft shouldn’t be the final. My first draft was terrible, because I just wrote whatever came to my mind often not in complete sentences.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

Viewing the past four essays shows the progress and decline of my writing style, and structure. The four essays that were required by the class varied from the best to the worst, both having their similarities and differences. Choosing two out of the four essays, I came to a conclusion that the “process analysis” essay was the best, and the worst essay was the “descriptive” essay. Although it varied from their definitions and structure, the essay’s showed how much the writer, put their work into it. The certain characteristics that made it the worst to the best defined how well the essay would turn out to be.…

Throughout my first semester of college level English, there were various pieces of writing that I had to develop. A large range of them were opinionated, which is something I am not used to. In high school, teachers would tell the students exactly what type of essay to write and how to write it. High school papers were extremely concise in a way that a student was not allowed to think too far out of the box; ideas were stifled. This semester I was able to write essays on topics that I could relate to.…

Before taking this course I almost felt as it I was doing the person an injustice by proofing their paper, because I honestly had no clue what I was looking for. Aside, from the grammatical and meaning part of writing an essay this course has given me something very special and that is a love of writing. I never in a million years thought I would utter those words, but I actually have really enjoying writing papers for this class. Looking back on this past semester, though I still have room for improvement with some grammatical issues and other writing errors, I still believe I deserve an A for my…

I never liked writing due to the fact that I always thought I was either behind on standard english writing habits or what I wrote was wrong in some sense. I’ve chosen to focus on “Exploration and Argumentation” as the subject of this reflective introduction, specifically looking at my argument paper, “Abortion: Right or Wrong?” as a reference to the importance of this learning outcome. I chose to focus on this particular learning outcome because it was the most difficult essay for me to create. While writing this essay it was difficult for me to understand and reciprocate the opposing viewpoint. Understanding an unfamiliar idea and giving ideas for or against a topic is key to creating a fluent argumentative essay.…

When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…
