Becoming a supervisor and protection detail leader was a great accomplishment in my career but I knew it would be challenging because of the conditions I was about to face. I assumed a leadership role in a team that I had been working with each member for six to ten years. Each of them was not only a co-worker but a friend that I have spent a lot of time, working and traveling with them. The previous leader had promoted and moved on but was still a person I admired and trusted. I made sure there was a transitional discussion with the previous leader who had also been my supervisor, prior to them promoting. After the discussion, I knew that any reference or criticism to their leadership would be critical for my team. I listened to each one of them, trying not to intrude at any point with my views. By growing through the same rank as each of the team members, I didn't want to discuss my intentions or goals initially but knew that I wanted to build the moral with my practices. Each of the team members knew that I was consistent in my decisions and had a great deal of loyalty to our section and the department. The issues that I would and would not tolerate were clear and concise after being known from the amount of time I have spent with them in previous years.
