Around the nation, there is a total of 152 VA Hospitals, which help care for roughly 8.3 million veterans a year (“Veterans Health”). The team that I selected is the Inova Medical Group in Ashburn, Virginia. They are a family medicine practice serving patients of all ages, from infants to adults. The need for teamwork and collaboration between all perioperative members is critical to maintain patient safety. Without the presence of active, ongoing communication between preoperational personal, there is heightened potential for risks and errors. Examples of adverse events include wrong-site surgeries, incorrect procedures, patient mix-ups, overlooking allergens, and errors in listed medications. Throughout this project, I have further developed many leadership competencies from personal learning to adaptability. I further developed these leadership competencies through constantly seeking feedback from my teammates about what I can do better and trying to become more adaptable to other people and not just focus on myself. I believe these leadership behaviors demonstrated emotional intelligence because I was being aware that my teammates had much more to offer than just their own personal work. They helped me generate ideas for my own work and seeking feedback from them and giving feedback made our group grow into a much better team. My clinical experience as the team leader for this week’s clinical rotation was awesome. As the leader for the group I prepared myself to provide my peers with the necessary tools to be successful in their patient care. A few clinical practice and prevention utilized were such as: proper hand hygiene, and standard precautions like wearing gloves when in contact with patients. I was able to communicate clearly with my peers and with patients. During this semester I was able to experience many accomplishments, all of them have helped me to gain a better understanding of what kind of leader I aspire to be.
