Mebane Leadership Style

In 1987 I started my quest in the fire service. As an egger, inquisitive, young 14 year old kid; I lived and breathed the fire service. I was at the station all the time. I rode the fire apparatus and was mesmerized at everything I saw. Being a second generation firefighter I basically grew up around fire stations; spending time between two departments Mebane and Burlington. Knowing at a young age the career choice for me was to follow in my father’s footsteps. I joined Mebane Fire Department as a volunteer in 1994, and then Burlington as a career firefighter in 1998. My father retired just before I was hired so when I received my father’s equipment number. The experience humbled and thrilled me all at the same time. With 19 plus years of service with Burlington Fire, I have set out on a new quest for a promotion to Assistant Chief of …show more content…
Some of those leaders were very remarkable in their leadership, gaining the respect of all under them. I also observed leaders that had horrendous leadership styles. These leaders had the respect of those under them; however it was only due to the rank they held. Deciding I never wanted to be the type of leader where the comments were made like; “I respect the rank not the person”. Learning from my previous observations as I made it to an officer’s rank, I set in my mind that I was going to be a Servant Leader and put the needs of my personnel at a high level. Understanding that as a captain and a battalion chief my primary goal was to lead my personnel with passion and respect. However as an officer you have the need to wear many different styles of leadership hats. I would place my hat on situational leadership. Knowing that in the fire service situational leadership style best fits the ever evolving atmosphere we work in. I have gained the respect of many of the subordinates that have worked under my leadership and those whom have not worked directly under

In December 1885, the City Council considered the merits of a fully paid Department and moved to finance and control the first fully paid, official Los Angeles Fire Department. In February 1886, the LAFD officially went into service with four fire stations. The first city owned forestation was Engine Company No. 1 and was established in 1887. Into the early 20th century the Department began to fully expand its operations such as improved membership benefits, use of motorized apparatus, creation of the Mountain Patrol, and the implementation of the Emergency Medical Service System. In 1915, the Department changed over to a two-platoon system, requiring members to work a 12-hour day or 12-hour night shift for a total of 72 hours per week.…

The specific qualities of a leader have always been in question in determining if an individual has the characteristics of a great leader. From the early 1840’s with the Great Man Theory to today with Charismatic Theory, leadership styles are constantly being analyzed and formulated to fit in the current context of leadership. Merriam – Webster describes leadership as the power or ability to lead other people in a group, organization, or situation (Leadership, 2015, p.1). An interesting thought about a leadership is that if a sample population is asked what are the characteristics of a great leader there would be a variety of answers because each individual has their own formulated idea about how a great leader should act and conduct tasks. Leadership has a drastic transformation when you analysis different fields and careers of leaders.…

In Band of Brothers, a dramatized video series that documents the lives of WW2 paratroopers, Captain Sobel one of the series main characters is notorious for bad leadership and demonstrates, in several ways how not to lead others. For instance when he is inspecting his men in formation he is out of the Uniform of the Day and is instead in a flight type suit and jacket and this sends a message to his men that he is either better than them or he doesn’t want to be seen as equal as them. Both very bad things for a leader too not only want to show, but for others to see that certainly stains the appearance of the platoon and company. Another major failure in leadership involving Captain Sobel happens when he is inspecting his men’s racks and personal…

When I was a lieutenant in the Colombian Army I was in charge of a platoon of 45 soldiers. I remember one day that my battalion commander, Colonel Piza Gaviria, approached me and suggested that he was not very comfortable with my way of managing my platoon. He wanted me keep a greater distance with my soldiers because he believed that they might abuse my trust, and lose respect if I am too close to them. I told him that I learned that method of leading my team during my years at the military school, and that I never had problems with this system of command. Also, I explained him that during my 4 years at the Cadet Military School I had learned that it was important to show your subordinates that as a leader you are approachable and open to…

Deck plate leadership, leading by example and getting to know your people. How often do we hear this? Quite a bit, as a matter of fact you hear about it but don’t necessarily see a lot of it. It is easy to sit back and do your daily work, for whatever reason it is, whether it is because we have a lot to do that day, over tasked and undermanned or plain old busy. To me leadership is getting out there and talking to the crew.…

The style of leadership that comes closest to my own is the Priest. This is logical since I was brought up through my formative years in the military. Working in an environment that prepares for the possibility of war, there luxury of allowing countless opinions and input is not feasible. There has to be a strong chain of command that issues orders and expects them to be followed. Command and Control are essential to winning in a war, just as priests employ structure and order.…

Leadership is defined as influencing others by providing purpose, motivation, and direction (ADP 6-22). A leader will not always be the smartest person, there will always be someone more proficient in tactics or marksmanship than they are. A leader will not always be the strongest person, someone will always have a higher APFT score. These things don’t make them bad leaders, these things make them human. A leader is there to guide their soldiers.…
