Purdue Owl: A MLA Analysis

Decent Essays
MLA format was expected to be known through all my past classes and I’ve been so accustomed to using it, I didn’t expect to be surprised reading through Purdue Owl. On the contrary, I did learn a few interesting things that I haven’t been implementing when formatting my essays. When citing my sources, usually my main focus would be the Works Cited page, however the in-text citations have equal importance. Often times, I would save my citations for last, causing me to miss a few points that were maybe hidden, for example a paraphrase rather than an obvious quote. Purdue Owl broke down every element to how to properly cite an essay which was a great refresher.

I also took notice that in rough drafts of both of these papers I was misusing MLA citation and removed the comma before the quotation marks in the final drafts and just put a period at the end, unless of course, they were quoted as a block quote. Both essays, 1.3 and 2.1, met outcome two, demonstrated though use of appropriate quote placement and strategic planning to write in a logical order flow in the…

Daniel Ward Professor Meyers English 111 5 October 2015 Cavity-Back Versus Muscle-Back Could game improvement irons be preventing individuals from becoming a better ball striker? The game improvement concept that originated in the 1980s has offered a new style of golf club head called a cavity-back. Traditionally, the muscle-back iron design requires a better swing and is not very forgiving however, it gives one more control and a softer feel. Muscle-backs gained their nickname from the original blade style iron, which were hand forged by a blacksmith over 150 years ago.…

During the writing of my analysis I learned that in MLA format your name and the page number should be included in the top corner. I learned that the page number and your name should be in the top right corner, and that the heading is on the left side. I think overall I did pretty well with the page citation and paraphrases. The page citation was pretty simple, but even though the paraphrases were more difficult I believe I still did pretty well with them. I don’t believe I had any problems with either, I think I understood them well.…

Their is no shortcut to learning MLA, it can only be achieved through relentless practice. As these slow and challenging practices became daily, the entire class began to wonder why on earth we were learning this. Mrs. Bunn would tell us that colleges would require it, but the students dismissed the reason. Within weeks in my first college English class, low and behold the infamous MLA format is the center of the entire course.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

A writing experience that has stood out the most for me was when I was a sophomore in High School. There was a girl in my class who I wasn't so fond of who one day decided to announce to everyone that she had begun to write her own stories. She showed everyone pieces of her writings expecting to get nothing but compliments and be to deemed the class writer, but when she finally showed me her work I cringed at how deplorable it was. The stories had no clear perspective of whether it was written in first person or third person view, some of the simplest of words were spelled wrong, and many words were used in the wrong context. The class didn't seem to care for her stories so they just gave standard responses with no words for…
