Dear Mrs. Audra Rouse and Delgado students,
I attended my first ever collegiate class at Delgado Community College this semester. I feel Exuberant knowing I can excel and comprehend on a college level. Over the course of the year I have learned many new styles, tips and guidelines to writing. For my portfolio I mainly focused on revision using “combatting absenteeism “and “Olympic water sport” because those essays had a substantial amount of room for improvement. I will be using the “student profile” because it proves my mastery of writing profile essays. In college being concrete is important, so I also chose the descriptive paragraph as an example of an acquired style choice.
With my proposing a solution essay, “combatting absenteeism” I moved some paragraphs around to make the problem of absenteeism more clearly brought to the reader’s attention. While moving paragraphs around, I added transitions and made others read smoother so the essay flowed interruption free like a song. To meet the MLA requirements I fixed any errors in my work-cited page as well. This essay was my favorite essay to write this year, because I chose a topic that was interesting to me.

I was taught to be concise, while at the same time being concrete. Over the course, my vocabulary became increasingly better because of my investment in a thesaurus just for English 101. I selected, “Olympic water sport” and “Combatting absences” for my portfolio. Those two essays I feel are the most engaging topic that I wrote on this year. In both essays I made sure each paragraph had fluent transitions and conclusions. The selections I chose, demonstrate my knowledge of incorporating sources correctly. Writing concisely has been of my weak points now it is my strong

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

The assignment that is included in this portfolio is the Romeo and Juliet essay that I wrote in my freshman year of high school. The original assignment was to write about an important event in the play. The important event that I chose to write about, was the death of the character Tybalt, and the three main causes that contributed to it. I chose to include this piece in my portfolio because it was not one of my best pieces of writing, and I wanted to show a distinct difference in my writing over the past year. This piece of writing is very telling of my 9th grade year.…

My portfolio consists of three different types of essays, an Argument Description, an Argument Analysis, and two Revision essays. For the argument description essay, I used “The Sexism of School Dress Codes” by Li Zhou to describe the negative effects dress codes have had on female and transgender students. And for the Argument Analysis and one of the Revision essays, I used Kanye West’s music video “Through the Wire” to analyze the importance of him producing his music video. With the different essays I wrote in my English course, I learned that revision was necessary to have a well written essay.…

Overall, I feel that I have made great strides and achievements in this class and the evidence can be located throughout my portfolio where my instructor can find proof of the following: attention grabbers otherwise known as the hook, the usage of 5-7 sentence paragraphs, the usage of transitional statements, the usage of vivid and descriptive words, the proper use of semicolons and commas, as well as omitting dead words. My portfolio illustrates how I have gradually evolved from a high school level of writing skills to a beginner level of college writing. In the beginning when I started this writing class I was totally confused how to reach a college level of writing skills and practices. Then I slowly started to learn the correct way to setup an efficient personal writing method that I felt comfortable using but did not overwhelm myself with the amount of work at once. To forge this personal writing process, I had to learn the correct way to organize an essay, write a well developed thesis, cite scholarly sources I used, and use appropriate evidence from them. With this process it also taught me how to write with efficient speed and accuracy.…
