What are hotspots?
Hot spots are locations where there is a small group of people that make up a large percentage of the health care cost for the given population. Usually they are comprised of lower income families or people. The reasons for these pockets are numerous, some of these problems revolve around that fact they are unable to afford basic medical care or maintain a healthy lifestyle. Since these people are unable to meet there basic medical needs, they are forced to ignore certain aspect of their medical care or are forced to use more expensive forms of medical care. As a result these communities accumulate large medical bills, that go unpaid.
Why do you think poverty is so closely associated with increased health care costs?
I think that poverty is associated with increased health care costs because they are unable to afford the basic measures that prevent more expensive health care trips. Examples of this are the ability to access food or sanitation. People who are struggling to make ends meet, rarely would spend money on more expensive, better quality food. A better diet is associated with people living healthier. Additonally, living in a cleaner environment is also associated with healthier lifestyle which could decrease the number of infections. Again the main problem with this is that people who desire living a cleaner environment are going to have to pay for this, which unfortunately often becomes neglected because the expenses to pay for…
