Free software with no potential upgrades or strings attached, websites that are covered in flashy ads, and free Wi-Fi in an unexpected place are all signs that something may be wrong, and ignoring that intuition can get you in trouble. This law was first passed in 1968 and revised in 1986. The law protects the privacy of people’s online communication. This includes things such as e-mail, telephone conversations, and digital messaging (U.S. Legal 2010). Having this law has somewhat helped protect people’s private information that they use to communicate with others. Another law that helps protect privacy on the Internet is the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act or “COPPA”. This act was enacted in April of 2000 and it protects the privacy of children who are under 13 years of age. This act protects children under this age by calling for parental consent for the use or gathering of any personal information of these children. Due to children being targeted in Internet marketing, this act was created. Having this law allows parents to be more involved with what their kids do online, protects children’s safety when using the Internet, and it also protects the children’s privacy which includes their personal
