Prayer Is Not Only Speaking With God Essay

Before this class, I didn’t realize that there is no correct way to pray. Although, after participating in this class, I have since had an entirely new understanding of prayer. I have learned that prayer must come from within myself, speaking with God exactly how I feel. As well, I must be honest, compassionate and committed. Prayer requires not only speaking with God using my very heart and mind, but also listening to God with my heart and mind. Prayer can occur anywhere, and at any time. It can occur in a chapel after first waking up for the day, or while walking to class, or in my room before going to bed. It can take place while listening to music, watching a movie reading the bible, or creating an art form, like a grace globe. It can occur in a large group, or alone. Prayer can be short, or it can be long. It can be as simple as meditating over the word “love” and practicing deep breathing, or it can be more extensive, like asking God how you can serve him. There are also many reasons to pray, such as discernment, vocation, giving thanks, or to simply be with God. Also, I learned that God is within us, and he can be one of my best friends, though it may take a while to develop a relationship with him. One of my favorite visions of God that I remember from this semester was that our relationship with him is like standing side by side with him, looking in the same direction, and beating the same heart.
