4. “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you” (Jeremiah 29:12). As a child I remember kneeling before my bed and praying for my parents to stop fighting. I found these moments comforting. I was able to express my emotions and share my thoughts, hoping for an answer. Unfortunately, I was never given a direct answer to my problem and I felt confused. I thought God was ignoring me and that my pain was not important enough to fix. I realized it was neither mine nor God’s responsibility to fix this problem. The solution was between my parents. The answer was within their will. We can not demand God to fix all of our problems and mistakes. If the solution is within our power, we must resolve the issue on our …show more content…
During history’s worst moments, it is important to realize that it is not by God’s will. Mass disasters do not signify God punishing us. Many people believe that natural disasters are created by God because he is fed up with the way we are behaving and sinning. Instead we should take these tragic moments as a way to help others. It is during moments of tragedy that the goodness of humanity is tested. It is during these moments that our help is needed. During Hurricane Sandy, many communities stood together to help raise, rebuild and assist those of need. This is the voice of God. These actions display the will of …show more content…
What horrible thing did I do, to deserve this suffering? I am always left with the idea that we live in a cruel and unfair world where regardless of your character some will suffer more than others. I have been left without an answer about why we suffer. It feels to me like life is a game of luck, some people are good at winning and others are cursed with bad luck. I always wonder why can’t we just live in a world full of happiness and blessings. Why must we suffer? I think about 911, and how much suffering this tragedy caused. I ask myself, where was God, how did he allow this to happen. Why would God allow so many lives he created to be destroyed. I feel angry and confused. In comparison I think about my aunt who was given so many misfortunes in life. Her husband was killed by a drunk driver, her daughter was then diagnosed with schizophrenia, and her son recently died of pancreatic cancer. How can so much misfortune strike one person. What did she ever do to deserve such suffering? There are so many worse people out there who are blessed with such a better life. Why isn't the level of suffering fairly distributed, why do the good suffer more then the

How could an all-powerful, good God allow natural disasters to take lives and bring devastation to millions of people around the world? In Terence Fretheim’s book, Creation Untamed: The Bible, God, and Natural Disasters, the author attempts to answer that exact question. He does this by examining Old Testament passages, drawing conclusions on the nature of God, and His intentions and actions through that. Fretheim does a great job at backing up his claims with empirical evidence from passages from the Bible. Before I jump into this reflection I want to set the stage for how devastating natural disasters can be.…

Bad times are inevitable in everybody’s lives, but some question: what good can come from the bad? First published on April 7, 2014, the article “What Suffering Does,” by New York Times columnist and PBS News Hour commentator, David Brooks, digs into this idea through claims that suffering plays a major role in people’s lives because it helps them grow as people (Behrens). Brooks states that happiness is just one piece of “the human drama” and suffering is the other (Behrens). Brooks’ topic of discussion is relevant in everyone’s lives because it is a topic everyone experiences first-hand, and he logically argues through examples that support his claims throughout the article. Brooks’ biggest points are that suffering provides opportunities to get an outsider’s point of view, better understand what others are experiencing, and help people learn more about themselves (567).…

A tropical wave developed into Tropical Storm Matthew near Barbados on September 28. Continuing westward under the influence of a mid-level ridge, the storm steadily intensified to attain hurricane intensity by 18:00 UTC on September 29. The effects of southwesterly wind shear unexpectedly abated late that day, and Matthew began a period of rapid intensification; during a 24-hour period beginning at 00:00 UTC on September 30, the cyclone's maximum winds more than doubled, from 80 mph (130 km/h) to 165 mph (270 km/h), making Matthew a Category 5 hurricane,[1] the first since Hurricane Felix in 2007.[2] Due to upwelling of cooler waters, Matthew weakened to a Category 4 hurricane later on October 1. Matthew remained a powerful Category 4 hurricane for several days, making landfall near Les Anglais, Haiti, around 11:00 UTC on October 4 with winds of 150 mph (240 km/h).…

Before the hurricane, I would make sure we know how previous hurricanes have affected our area in the past, which parts of our region got hit the hardest, etc. To stay safe, it is key to stock up on food, water, batteries, blankets, and any other essentials that we may need during the storm that will be difficult to obtain while it’s passing through. It is also crucial to know what to do if evacuation is necessary. Discussing with the family where to be if the house is unsafe is important since that evacuation notice may come when not everyone is in the house. During the hurricane, staying safe involves staying indoors as much as possible, getting to higher ground, which is less likely to be flooded, and evacuating if told to.…

The life of the Old Testament legion, Job, portrays biblical evidence of the inescapable presence of trials in the life of those who pursue a relationship with God. Job empathically states, “ Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble” (Job 14:1 ESV). “Man born of woman” is a poetic way of saying “everyone.” The term Man translates Hebrew ’aDam and refers to humankind, or everyone. Man’s few days are troublesome.…

My perspective on the existence of God and the problem of Evil breaks down to free will, therefore I believe that although God is all-knowing and all-loving, allowing humanity to process free will created a gate for Evil to rise in the form of decision making. God allowed humanity to exercise free will. This may, in a certain perspective portray God as an evil entity, but he does not command humanity to commit crimes, rape, murder, lie, cheat, or steal. A person’s own free will is the decision maker hence forth developing the necessary Evil which becomes the biggest issue in our society. Here are some reasons why free will is the Evil problem in the existence of God.…
