Pixar Interview Essay

Before this informational interview, I could never comfortably admit to myself that I wanted to work in the film industry. It seemed so distant and unattainable, and, according to my engineer parents, impractical.
Nevertheless, I have always loved storytelling and the arts, so when it was time for us to choose our “dream internship” for this course, I spent approximately one minute browsing HireSmith before decisively heading over to my favorite company’s career website.
Like almost every other human who has ever seen a Pixar animated feature, I originally loved Pixar for its indisputably incredible films. But, as I learned more about the studio’s history, management approach, and philosophies, I grew to appreciate Pixar for more than its theatrical products.

With Pixar located in Emeryville, California, on a coast I have yet to visit, I didn’t expected to be able to find an actual Pixar employee to interview, at least until I talked to Professor Mark Wellman. He had mentioned a trip to Pixar Studios in class, and after I asked him for possible connections, he kindly directed me to Mr. Marc Greenberg, UMD alumnus and the Vice President of Finance and Strategy at Pixar Animation Studios. Being able to speak to an actual Pixar employee was intimidating, to say the least. I vividly remember screaming in excitement after Mr. Greenberg replied to my initial email saying he’d be willing to chat with me. And so it was decided a few emails later that we would talk over Skype on Friday, March 17th at 7:30

Films are products of their time and evolve as American culture evolves. As such, directorial use of existing technology, and the cultural desire for improved movie-making have led to the development of the motion picture industry. “To most people, a movie is popular entertainment, a product to be produced and marketed by a large commercial studio. Regardless of the subject matter, this movie is pretty to look at – every image is well polished by an army of skilled artists and technicians” (Barsam & Monahan, 2016, p.3).…

Most Americans have seen at least one movie in their life, whether that be in the comfort of their homes or at a movie theater opening weekend. Actors and actresses in front of the camera get most of the attention when in blockbuster movies, but many more people work on a film that are never seen on screen. For example, the director of the movie is the mind and maker of the creative aspects of the movie. The producer is known for putting together the cast, the crew, and making sure everything is organized and on schedule. Directors and producers are in every film set in every movie ever made, which means a lot of jobs and opportunities for both men and women.…

From Disney Pixar comes Up, a comedy adventure about 78-year-old ballon salesman Carl. The sometimes grumpy elderly old man Carl wants to fulfill his lifelong dream of visiting South America. He ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilderness but discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has latched himself along for the ride: an overly optimistic 8-year-old named Russell. The movie UP is a surprising tale of followings one 's dream, facing fears and being true to who you are even in the face of hardship and also about the power of human connections. Erikson’s psychological theory of development described development as occurring in eight discrete stages across a person’s lifespan.…

Disney Pixar conveyed many life lessons or themes in the movie Maleficent ; this movie teaches to be careful for what you say, because sometimes it can’t be taken back. According to the movie, Maleficent put a spell on king stephen's daughter as revenge from betrayal. Because of stephen taking her wings for royalty/king all of this stuff that happened it was the only reason she set a curse on the princess the day there was a ceremony for the newborn baby in the kingdom. This supports the theme because, Maleficent said in the curse that it can never be revoked not even by the earth's strongest power, but when she tried to revoke it she knew it didn't work. Even though she tried to believe it did hoping for the best.…

…For a moment, Carlton Hislop wandered down the twisting path that one calls life, and on that rambling route, he stopped at the door of his former employer, Gordon Stenberg, who was the first to recognize young Hislop’s potential in the movie world of Xanadu. Prior to this momentous meeting, Hislop was studying business at Stanford, and it was there, in those hallowed halls of academia, he learnt about the infinite possibilities of making money from movies. So impressed by the mercantile promise of films, young Carlton Hislop (with a help of a friend in Xanadu) wrote a series of impassioned letters to all the major studios asking as to whether they would consider him for an internship. Out of all those studios, only Gordon Stenberg offered him a position on the proviso that he…

Bob Iger once said “The heart and soul of a company is creativity and innovation.” And I think that is true, however Bob Iger is a businessman, he runs one of the most wealthy and most beloved companies in the world today, The Walt Disney Company. And because he is a businessman, of course he wouldn’t see the full picture of those words he spoke. A better way of saying that quote instead would be. “The heart and soul of a person is created by their creativity and innovation.”…
