Gun Violence in America
Throughout history gun violence has escalated while the regulations on them have also become more serious. Gun restrictions were first implemented in the 20th century, when acts of violence shook the nation and began to make people focus on who we should allow to carry guns. Though as our laws have become stricter we haven’t seen a large decline in gun violence. Our country is broken up mostly into two groups of people: those who believe that it is our constitutional right to carry a weapon and those who believe that the right to carry a gun should be strictly licensed and in most cases prohibited. For some people who are for greater gun control in the United States they believe that the government needs to be regulating guns in a much stricter way. It is found that most massacres in the United States the guns that are used are totally legal. According to Mother Jones, three fourths of the guns used in the past 70 mass shootings were legal weapons. (Mark Follman) Pro-gun control advocates think that if the laws were stricter these kinds of events could be stopped before they happen. As Molly Ivins says, “As a civil libertarian, I, of course, support the Second Amendment. And I believe it means exactly what is says: A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Fourteen-year-old boys are not part of a well regulated militia.” (Ivins) She is saying that if the American People were actually following the constitution it would be much harder for anybody to buy and use a gun. Background checks could potentially keep guns out of the hands of criminals, domestic abusers, and seriously mentally ill people. Another argument on the side of pro-gun control is that these laws protect children. Moms Demand Action was a group created in response to the incident at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
