Persuasive Essay On Cyberbullying In School

Bullying is a common concern in the high school setting. One of the more serious forms of bullying noted in schools is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is known as “bullying that takes place using electronic technology,” as stated by stopbullying.gov. This form of bullying seems to be increasing on high school campuses as social media sites emerge. Some feel students who cyberbully should be suspended from school. Others believe students should not be disciplined due to cyberbullying. Students who commit cyberbullying should be suspended from school because cyberbullying distracts from learning, creates emotional distress, and threatens the physical safety of students and teachers. Cyberbullying negatively affects the students’ focus at school. The primary reason for school is learning. There are many distractions students face daily while at school, including a cell phone ringing, and instant messages. Students who are cyberbullied may spend time concentrating on what has been posted on the internet and who has seen what was posted. The fear of what one sees posted is overwhelming. The information being posted may be humiliating and hurtful. A student who dwells on the fear and information may become distracted from learning in the classroom. His or her grade point average could begin to decline as a result of being distracted …show more content…
When bullied, students may retaliate against the offender by bringing weapons into the school and harm fellow classmates, teachers, and even themselves. The effects of retaliation by a cyberbullied high school student may have a lasting impression on the entire school. Students may be afraid to return to school due to the trauma of the shooting. Many could transfer to another school district to avoid the reminder of the tragedy; also the possible mental instability and counseling that will be needed as a result of
