As the season gets closer to summer the nights start to get warmer, and as the nights get warmer the kids play longer. Throughout lunch I heard about night games, which all my friends went to, and how much fun everyone had. Feeling left out I turned to Elli asking if we could do our own night games tonight. We didn't know if there would be enough people free after school to actually come. Afterwards, sitting at my house, on the stairs, waiting to hear any news about night games; I sent a text to Elli. She had found out that no one could actually make it; additionally I had one person who could, his name is Austin, and I had a crush on him. I had completely forgotten that Dad would be expecting people there by now; the knot in my stomach just seemed to double in size. Dad was already becoming unhappy with the mess I was making for him. When I got there I gladly went in, happy to be out of the …show more content…
I knew the sound of the engine far too well. The driver would be a high school junior named Scott, with a graduated passenger named Bennet. I didn’t even need to see them pull in all the way before the color in my face disappeared. I knew that I had to get out of the gas station soon, or hide. Not wanting to alarm Elli at the danger we were in; I simply asked if we could hurry out. Elli just finished up the last bit of business she had, as the charger finished parking. We casually walked out of the gas station, quickly turning to our bikes to ride back. I smile to myself, proud of the clean get away—until I

Standing on the curb, Veronica pulled her jacket tighter against the breeze, and exhaled the slightest bit when the charger came into view. Through the car’s heavy tint, she couldn’t see the driver exactly, but the effortlessly smug look from the driver’s seat when she climbed in was instantly familiar. Hands at her sides, feeling the seat’s leather as he peeled away from the curb, Veronica had to miss the bike, a little. Sure, the threat of death rang less imminent, even in the seat termed ‘shotgun,’ but oddly enough, sharing a console felt more intimate than the physical proximity of sharing the motorcycle. “Are you gonna tell me what this is about?”…
