“Come on, Amanda, it’ll be fun!” Jessie said. “I don’t know,” I said doubtfully. “We’ll be alone? In the middle of nowhere?” “Okay, I know it’s a cabin in the woods, but my family goes to the cabin almost every year, and nothing bad has ever happened to us. Come on! Don’t be a pansy. Charlotte and Jamie already said yes!” She pouts. “I know, but-” Jessie barrels on. “One week! One week in a cute cabin, with a view of Mt.Hood, The Three Sisters, Mount Jefferson! You know you want to,” She sing-songed. “You’re right, like always.” I sighed. “All right, I’ll go. Does it have cell service?” “I don’t know. Probably not. It’s technically my Grandma’s, so I doubt it.”
“Okay. I’ll see you then.” I hugged her. “Thanks, Scarlet, you’re the BEST!” Jessie squealed. “It’ll be fun, I promise.”

“She will be,” Jamie said from the back. “She just has to come up separate. She knows the way, She’ll be there.” We pulled into the gravel driveway. “We’re here!” Jessie trills. “Come on, let’s unpack.” I grabbed my bags from the back of the red truck and stepped inside. “Whoa.” “Ta-da! Welcome to Casa de Gramma.” Jessie laughs. “Do you like it?” The cabin was small. The entryway had space for shoes before opening up into a small living room/kitchen. The floor was concrete, and there was a wooden picnic table to the left. To the right was a fridge, a gas stove, and a small sink. There were three doors on the back wall, surrounding a large brick fireplace. The room smelled of disinfectant and burnt

Throughout the course of my short seventeen years, I have grown and learned many things. I grew up in a small rural town called Elk Creek. There are no strangers in Elk Creek; people sleep with their doors unlocked and their windows open. Everyone who has grown up in a small town can agree that friendship and community become a second nature trait. Although I have copious amounts of love and respect for where I grew up; I believe that I do not belong there.…

When I was ten years old, I moved to West Texas. I loved swimming in the lakes and ponds around my home before, so I was disappointed when I found out that there was only one body of water near my new home. This “lake” (about the size of a football field) was called Clearwater Lake. It took about an hour’s time to drive there. The first time my family drove over there, I was amazed by how many people there were, all the cars packed liked sardines, the people moving so slowly it was like molasses.…

Shocked, overwhelmed and confused, is how I felt when my father came home and told me that he had signed us up for Philmont. Fourteen days in New Mexico, with ten other scouts, hiking ninety-one miles, every fifteen year old’s dream, right? Personally, I could not believe my father was talking like he was thrilled.
