The way that each children addressed one another at first glance can appear to be very harsh and mean, but according many of the girls I taught dance to this was how they all played with one another. The ratio of staff member to children who all attend is 3:35, a normal day for the women who watch over the children consist of them saying words like “Stop running”, “Do not go over there” “Stop yelling” and “No”. After my third day volunteering I realized many qualities that are important while working with children. First, patience; the last time I had to deal with children that were younger than 10 was when I was 14. So. at first I went home and asked my mom several questions. Over time I learned to be patient with them, at such a young age it’s hard for you to stay still, be quiet, and listen. Because your mind is focused on a million things, the thing that holds your attention the longest is the one that seems more appealing. When teaching dance there are many times when you have to be quiet, stay still, and listen to the teacher explain and show you what to do next. Unfortunately, there was many times when I had to explain myself more than once. When I asked my mom for the solution she told me that children tend to want to do something when they know there is a award at the end. So my mom told me next time I teach a lesson have candy and it will solve the problem. When people say “Mother’s are always right,” they are correct. When I brought candy my problems with the girls went away. Second is to be animated, as soon as you step into the door the issues you faced during the day stays outside, because the attitude that you have sets the tone for how the class will go. The girls I taught fed off of my energy when I am excited about a dance and came into the lesson with enthusiasm, I noticed that they appeared more engaged and
