Reflective Narrative 1 When I was thinking about what to do as a senior project, I knew that I wanted to do something helpful for the school, in an uncomplicated way. Since sophomore year, I’ve been involved in the school’s peer mediation program. It is a very valuable program in the school, so for my senior project I wanted to learn more about it as well as expand it by recruiting underclassmen and leading mediation trainings. The steps involved in planning this project included meeting with my mentor several times a week to discuss recruiting strategies and to plan trainings that I would be leading. I also spent time researching mediation strategies so that I would have a good understanding of what I would be teaching. My next step will be to meet with my mentor and send out notes to students who might be interested in peer mediation encouraging them to sign up. My mentor is John Cornet. He is a teacher and coach at Phoenix High School and he runs the peer mediation program. We have met one or two times per week during lunch since september and a few times outside of school for longer meetings to collaborate on effective recruitment methods and training skills. I have also done research on specific mediation topics and techniques in certain mediation situations, such as how to deal with people who are at high risk of harming themselves or others as safely as possible. Along with educating myself, my mentor has taught me about the laws involved with mediation, including what a mediator should do if the person that he or she is mediating is partaking in illegal and harmful activities.
