I was very excited but also nervous about meeting my school mentor. I felt better once my SU mentor gave me background information on Mrs. Trotz, my school mentor. Mrs. Trotz recently got married and graduated from Stevenson University. I thought it was cool that she graduated from the school that I am currently attending. I couldn’t wait for Tuesday morning to finally meet Mrs. Trotz face to face at Carroltown Elementary School.
On Tuesday, the principle introduced me to Mrs. Trotz and her kindergarten class. Mrs. Trotz was very nice and greeted me with a huge smile. She allowed me to work with a small group on the first day. She told me, “I’m going to put you to work” and I was extremely motivated. My last school mentor didn’t give me many

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

I met Andrea Seaberg two years ago when she was a senior at Detroit Lakes High School. She had been placed to work with me (a second grade teacher) from her School-To-Work advisor after she had told her that she was interested in becoming a teacher someday. Andrea and I hit it off immediately. She had the same love and energy that I feel I have as an educator. Needless to say, when she asked me to be her mentor throughout her schooling at Bemidji State University, I was thrilled.…

Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. I didn’t want a mentor that was a few years older I always wanted someone that was almost twice my age, maybe even older than me. My mentor that I will be talking about name is James. At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

Everyone has their own kind of sacrifices for better or worse. Sometimes we offer these sacrifices as a means to provide protection or some ray of hope. Tutors are known to be educated in whatever subject they tutor in as well as being extremely patient. Though some do it for free or may charge a fee, it always comes down to how much effort they put into each session and ultimately the result. I remember a particular event during sophomore year of high school, I offered to tutor a young freshman girl named Misha.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

1.) If I were working with a high school student who asked me if I had every smoked marijuana, I would probably tell him that we are not meeting to discuss me. However, I would be open to sharing that I was once his age and I know that the peer pressure that students experience in high school can be difficult to deal with. I am not too sure that I would ever feel comfortable sharing my personal information, because clients are not coming to hear about what I am dealing with, they are coming to have me help them process what is going on in their life.…

My educational story started a long time ago in Bogota, Colombia. Being one of four children in a low socioeconomic class made it difficult for my parents to afford a college education for all of us. My older brothers were in the engineering school, which was expensive, stretching my parent's pockets and, reducing the possibility for them to pay for my college tuition. When I was finishing high school, I looked at my different possibilities to pay for my education without having to resort on my parent’s money. I found out about a grant that a prestigious university offered to high school students with the best high school grades, and the best scores in the ICFES test (similar to the ACT test in North America).…
