Personal Narrative: My Senior Capstone Experience

Pre-Experience Journal Entry
I was born to be an engineer. I grew up playing math games, building lego sets, and taking apart electronics. My Senior Capstone Experience (SCE) will definitely be in the area of engineering. More specifically, I would love to do either computer science or electrical engineering, as these are the areas I want to major in when I go to college.
I came to GSMST because I have always had an interest in engineering, and GSMST has only made that interest stronger. My courses have definitely played a big role. In 9th and 10th grade I took programming classes and really enjoyed them. They helped me to learn the basics of programming, and after that, I took it upon myself to learn even more programming knowledge and skills. Therefore, my classes helped me realize my love for programming, and the infinite possibilities I could achieve through it. My Junior Fellowship Experience (JFE) also helped me realize I

I live a really fast paced life and go from one thing to another to another, and I never really find myself with much time to sit down and reflect on the actions I have taken. Sometimes, I just reason out that instead of wasting time thinking about something that already happened, I can go be productive and worry about what is happening right now. However, this isn’t necessarily the best way to look at things. A lot of times, I find myself making the same mistakes over and over again, like working on DIY projects instead of studying for a test or over-committing myself. Maybe, if I sat down and thought about the causes of my problems, I could recognize how to prevent those problems from happening. During my SCE, I will make sure to reflect on the actions I take that lead to positives and the actions I take that lead to negatives. By the end, I want to be a lot better at not only realizing my mistakes, but actually taking action to prevent myself from making them

The Lego Star Wars Millenium Falcon, or the Lego Mindstorms NXT? I have never been good at making decisions, even when it comes to toys. There are always so many different options, each of them so amazingly amusing and unique, that I cannot stand getting them all. Because of this, I strongly believe that limiting someone like me, who is curious and adventurous, to be able to try only one thing is wrong. Struggling to pick a toy may seem frivolous, but when it comes to the question of what I want to do in the future, it’s the real deal.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

One of the greatest accomplishments in United States history is perhaps one of the oldest bridges built in Brooklyn known as the Brooklyn Bridge completed on May 24, 1883, in New York City. The bridge connects to Manhattan and Brooklyn and part of the project may never have been completed without the assistance of no other than Emily Warren Roebling. Although Females are often recognized with stereotypes because of past history misrepresentation of females, Roebling helps motivate others to spread the word of knowledge to help females represent their strengths in society. Emily Warren Roebling is an idol to many female civil engineers and to all females because she had not conformed to the stereotypical lifestyle of women when women are bearing children and facing motherhood.…

Falling victim to a faulty mindset before, I realized the solution towards a difficult task would be to take a step back and reanalyze the problem. To illustrate, when I took the ACT for the first time I was incredibly nervous. Thinking I would only get a score below 30 I did not try very hard. Later that night, regretting the amount of effort I put in during the real test, I took a practice test with total effort and got a score much higher than I thought I could have gotten. Now, I often realize the key to overcoming a doubtful or unreliable state of mind, is to take an issue one step at a time.…

A few paragraphs earlier in this address Eisenhower mentions “in these days and in the years ahead the need for philosophers and theologians parallels the need for scientists and engineers.” Within my lifetime I have heard an unremarkable amount of facts and figures concerning how much STEM is growing, and thus have been greatly encouraged to pursue a degree in these fields. I am planning to major in Electrical Engineering and my mother is very pleased about this because I, according to her “need to get a good job that will provide for my wife as well as my mother.” I can honestly say that if I were to tell her that I was changing my major to philosophy she would likely faint, due to the reason that the odds of getting a job for philosophy…

Since graduating from Weber State University (WSU) with a Bachelors of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology (BSEET) in 2010, I have been working as an engineer in many capacities. Recently, I was promoted to a technical leadership position, and have realized that most engineers will face the decision in their careers to stay technical or to pursue a management path. It is because of my desire to delve deeper into the technical aspects of my work that I am applying for admissions to the Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) program at the University of Utah. My first exposure to the field of Electrical Engineering came while serving in the U.S. Air Force. There, I learned basic concepts about circuits and systems, and had the opportunity to work with engineers.…
