Personal Narrative: A Career In Radiology

Radiology Tech Admissions Essay
When I was seventeen years old, I took a professional medical careers course at New Market Skills Center in Washington to make up for some credits that I had missed for maternity absence. I continued the program my senior year. We prepared for the Certified Nursing Assistant exam and had clinical rotation for two weeks at Panorama City, a nursing home.
Through my clinical experience, I learned that being able to empathize with your patient is very important in the healthcare field. The first week I was at Panorama City, I helped some CNAs turn a patient so they can change her dressing on a bedsore that she had got from another nursing home. The whole time she was fighting us, yelling at us, and scratching us.

I enjoy working as part of a team because of the shared ideas and interpretations. As a sonographer, I expect to work alongside physicians, nurses, fellow sonographers, and other medical staff to offer patients a comprehensive treatment plan. Observing current sonographers added a valuable perspective to my expectations; they ensured patient comfortability and knew when to either spend extra time scanning or push the scans quickly (i.e. abnormal valve function vs a frustrated toddler).…

Becoming a nurse was not something I always knew I wanted to do. I knew that I wanted to have a career in the medical field due to the opportunity for innovations in health care and the challenges for improvement. It was not until my mother’s struggle with breast cancer that becoming a nurse became my mission. As a young child at my mom's bedside, I would watch her nurses as they took care of her. To me, they were pillars of compassion, strength, and advocacy that inspired me to pursue nursing.…

A human's heart will pump approximately four thousand gallons of blood each day (Fremgen and Frucht). This fact alone goes to show that human bodies are similar to machines. That being said all machines need tuning up from time to time as well as fixing when something is wrong. Medical professions are the mechanics for people. However, the medical field offers more opportunities and medical career avenues than being a mechanic.…

They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…

Medical sonographer provides patient services in multiplicity of medical surroundings. Performing procedures on ultrasound machines to view and interpret images with sound waves. Obstetrics (OB)/Gynecology ultrasound was the reason why I was interested in sonography. Being able to tell a mother the gender of their unborn baby on the day of their scan can be an excitement. With little experience about medical sonography, it turns out that ultrasound is not just about the reproductive system of a pregnant woman.…

I must ensure that the skills [communication, teamwork, active listening and organization skills] I have learned are well applied during my clinical placement. Effective communication is very important in the health care field. As a radiographer, maintaining a positive attitude towards others, explaining jargon words to patients and seeking help from health care professionals when necessary are some examples of effective communication skills (Crawford & Bonham, 2006). For example, during placement, I must try to remain professional, objective and optimistic when speaking to patients. I must ensure care, sympathy and empathy for patients.…

In this course so far, things started off relatively worrisome and stressful but things began to look up and get better but this is in relation to the internship. In regards to the class, things are going well and organized. I think one way to improve or to maintain the positive status of the class is to keep up with updates, remind class of any assignments coming up or what is due. While this is up to the student’s responsibility to be well organized and on top of their work, it does help aid in staying organized when you have a busy schedule and many other classes and other assignments that are due. Other than that, the quick email and DB responses are always a plus/positive.…

Knowing how to respond to someone who was going through difficult medical treatments, like chemotherapy, or who had lost someone was difficult. Yet the longer I worked in the hospital the more I started to get the sense that tip toeing around patients and families was unnecessary. It just added to the load of their already emotional journey. This was a good lesson to learn early on because illness, death, and dying is a reality of life that I will most likely come into contact with as a counselor. Moreover, working in a hospital was beneficial because I saw how medical professionals interacted with each other and their clients.…

Although I admit it was not a very important job, it allowed me to make connections with people I would normally never see or talk to in daily life. I believe that the more connections that I can make with others, the better off I will be because, put simply, empathy is a basic human emotion that seems to be slowly dying off. Our innovations in technology have isolated us and have eliminated the need for face-to-face contact or reading other peoples’ emotions. We no longer meet someone and connect with them face-to-face; technology is constantly distracting us, whether it is our phones or computers. That’s why these minor conversations I had with the patients were so meaningful since they allowed me to connect with others on a more personal level.…
