Telling Johnson my reluctance to ghostwrite a journal article for him shouldn't be misinterpreted as "slacking off," I walked away, and went looking for an emergency to handle. For the most part, Johnson left me alone during the rotation and interacted with me only on rare occasion. One day, however, a number of residents were out sick, and Johnson was forced to serve as a back-up physician for a few hours.…

This week in clinical I learned in a real life setting about how to properly administer medication. While at clinical, I successfully took vital signs and told my patient that I would return later to give her medication. With my clinical instructor, Elizabeth, we went to the pixus and retrieved the medication. We then returned to the room and I began to open the seal of the pill and my instructor gently told me that I needed to check her wristband prior to taking off the seal . Although, I knew who my patient was because I had checked her wristband earlier it is important to always follow protocol.…

Anaesthesiology is the only career choice I can envision myself pursuing. The hands-on approach to controlling and influencing a patient’s physiology excites me, and this excitement yields motivation. The intense nature of the operating room integrated with advanced pharmacological pathways to keep a patient alive stimulates my mind, and through stimulation I gain insight. The immediate feedback as to whether I’m performing my job right or wrong allows for self-improvement, and through improvement I can strive for perfection. The short-lived but close and meaningful relationships with patients I find rewarding, and through reward I acquire happiness.…

I have had the distinct pleasure of working with Rachel for the past eight months, when she started her rotation in the Ambulatory Clinics of then Interim LSU Hospital, now University Medical Center. As Rachel’s preceptor, I observed Rachel in the workplace during her Administrative Residency. I had many projects that I did not have time to do myself, and was overwhelmed as the new director, when Rachel started her rotation with me. From May until the move, everyone at the hospital was doing their usual job as well as attending an overwhelming amount of meetings on the move.…

Henry David Thoreau once advised “Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence.” Oftentimes, people limit their career goals to what is easily attained. I have decided to deviate the norms in my community, for I intend to pursue a career in the medical field and make a change in the lives of others. When I was six years old, my younger brother was born as a premature infant.…

I went back and forth to the mechanic shop to ask Aleck for Ying’s parts. While he focused on work, our personal interactions were reduced to a minimum. With time on my hands, I often visited the library, and focused my energy on improving my English reading skills.…

Many aspects of myself have changed since those third grade mornings when my entire class fueled their hobbies by researching sports or bugs on the computer program ReadAbout:™ while I continuously searched for articles on brain surgery or the latest medical technology. Since then, I have crafted a spot-on Miranda Sings impression, become a vegetarian, and learned that sports will never be my strong suit as I scored for the opposing team in basketball more than once. Throughout my seventeen years of life, however, one piece of me has remained unchanged. I am not sure where my passion for the medical field stemmed from as my parents are not doctors and going in for a checkup was scarier for my nine year old self than belting out my rendition…

Most people pursue a career in medicine to fulfill their families wishes or for the money associated with the work, but I am attracted to the medical field because it has grown to be a part of who I am. From the time I was a toddler illness has been an impactful factor of my life. When I was five years old my Poppop, who filled in for my not present father, was diagnosed with stage three Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Of course, at the time my understanding of his disease only went as deep as realizing he did not feel well and was unusually tired. He battled the disease for years and as I grew it progressed.…

A couple months ago I had a dream. I had a dream that my hard work in school was validated, and I got the letter telling me I’d been accepted into medical school. Later that day, I came to the realization of the relevancy of the dream; and I asked myself how my life would change if I knew at this moment that I’d make it to medical school. How would my life change if I knew I’d successfully get through all of these grueling advanced math and science classes? Going into high school, I had the impression that I would be able to get an A on every assignment, quiz, and test.…
