I push this long black curtain out of the way and I see a dashboard filled with buttons and levers. Then I hear a faint voice coming towards the door getting louder and louder. The heavy door swings open and I see my dad with grease on his cheek telling me that I should go back to bed. But I refuse and I sit in the passenger seat and put my seatbelt on. They had so many amazing professors that were patient and kind even when faced with a barrage of questions from 200 students. My dad would always call me 24/7 asking me if I ate or asking how my exams were going. He would also help me keep my cool when I got too stressed out from school. Then in the summer after my first year in UC Davis my dad passed away. I thought I lost all drive and passion in life and just felt lost. But in life you have to keep moving forward and this was a real growing portion of it. It wasn’t until the beginning of my third year that I met Dr. Amsterdam. The Dreaded Medicine Pass “Here is your medicine”, the nurse said as she walked into the resident’s room. Working in a nursing home I hear this phrase all the time. Even as a nursing assistant, I hear it every time a nurse comes in to give a resident medicine while I am trying to give care to him/her. I used to think that a nursing home was a happy place that all elderly people went to when they retired; however, as I got older I realized that I was wrong. Elderly people need help because they cannot take proper care of themselves.…

Curiosity has been something that has always struck me as being closely tied to a career in medicine. My grandfather was a general practice physician who I witnessed growing old and weakening as the days passed. As a child he always enjoyed showing me many things he has learned from his medical practice and hobbies that he did on the side when he was not on the clock. I relished his company and looked forward to visiting him every time I had the chance to. Later as his health started to decline, it was tough for me to see someone so close to me being rushed to the hospital time after time with a heart attack and significant strokes.…
