A one-third quota introduced by the ANC during the 1994 elections, resulted in 30% of all parliament members and provincial legislatures being women. All other political parties have no set quotas for women, and all have less than 25% of women in legislatures and parliament. There is no improvement in local government statistics as women are also under-represented, a maximum of 28% of women are counsellors and women in important positions such as mayors or chairs of committees are very scarce. This barrier of playing sports is the same idea or reason that women are not being able to fully participate in society. It is things like stereotypes and misperceptions of women that lead to this barrier or limited participation in society which leads to the sports field. (Women Win, 2013)
In America alone, football coaches along with minor league sports such as golf and wrestling are against the ideas of gender equality. They fear that if more resources are put into women sports funding that they will lose their own resources. Coaches have also stated that in doing this, they will decrease opportunities for men in the sporting industries. This could not be farther from the truth as the industry will not be replacing its players or sports people but increasing the total amount of athletes. (Foundation, 2014)
Society may believe that sport is not a feminist issue but it is. Participation in sport is as beneficial for men as it is for women. Gender roles are the roles that male and females undertake or need to fulfil in their daily lives. (unkown, 2014) Generally these roles are very stereotypical; women should take care of the children, cook dinner and have a job in working with the community e.g. nursing. While men have the more powerful jobs e.g. political/ business.
Yes, there are many jobs that are still dominated by one gender. In government or public services only a couple of women work in management and local government employees are 80% male. (unkown, 2014) . Nursing is especially dominated by the female gender.
ii. The phrase “glass ceiling” in business refers to an invisible, but real barrier that keeps people in the business from achieving more success (Napikoski, 2014), like a promotion. It is mostly used to refer to woman who are not able to or won’t be allowed to advance to the highest level of power. These barriers mostly exist as a cause of prejudice against age, ethnic culture, religion, along with political affiliations and
