At the world cup this year if the Matilda’s made it to the World Cup final they would still get payed less than if the Socceroos just showing up. The match fees the Matildas got payed was $500 each and the Socceroos get payed $7500 each. (AAP, June 2015) Even though the Matilda’s train the exact same amount, put the same amount of effort in, and are at the top of their game in Australia, the Socceroos still get payed 15 times the amount they do. Everything is controlled by the media. You don’t see women in sport getting in punch ups at pubs, sexually assaulting fans or taking drugs. This is because they are too busy trying to hold down a job because the sport they love and want to pursue professionally doesn’t pay enough. On top of this they have a high level of training because they are at such an elite level. Women in sport don’t get sponsored easily because of the media not promoting women in sport. Therefore society doesn’t think it’s important and sponsors don’t think it is as important to sponsor them over men. (Monique Bowley, 23 June 2015) It’s a whole chain of reactions, that all comes back to the media. If the media made women seem less like sexual objects and more like professional well trained athletes they would make more money, get more coverage and be able to do the sport they love without being pressured for sex
