How to Cook the Perfect Steak in a Pan Some people classify their diets with “meat and potatoes”, vegetarian, or vegan. I happen to be a meat and potatoes kind of girl, and steak dinners are a favorite meal in my household. My recipe for a perfectly cooked steak was influenced while having dinner at a restaurant in France. I ordered a well-done steak and the waiter quickly asked, “Why do Americans insist on cooking all the flavor out of their steak?” Instead of my order, he served a savory medium rare steak cooked to perfection. Therefore, I have altered my cooking techniques. This recipe is easy enough that even those who are novice to cooking, can sear a juicer and flavorful steak by following three simple steps. Approximately thirty minutes before cooking, take your steak out of the refrigerator and dry it thoroughly with paper towels. This is step is crucial due to excess moisture on your steak will ruin chances of a nice crust forming on the outside of the meat (Armis). Now, it’s time to season the steak with a generous amount of sea salt and a little freshly ground pepper; this also helps to add flavor and draw out any moisture. The additional fresh ground pepper will be added to the steak later to replace the pepper that will fall off during the cooking process. Allow your seasoned steak to sit out at room temperature for approximately 20 minutes; this will help the steak cook faster and more evenly. Set the steak aside and prepare the other ingredients. Next, peel one or two pieces of garlic cloves; these do not need to be sliced or minced, simply crush them with your hands against your cutting board to open the clove (Ramsay). Next, set aside three pieces of fresh thyme stems along with butter and fresh ground pepper. Finally, we begin to use the stove. Place two tablespoons of canola oil in you 12” non-stick frying pan over high heat. If your smoke alarms are highly sensitive, you may want to open a window or turn on the stove fans, considering the pan ought to be piping hot before placing the steak in.
