Advertisements vs. Consumer Many Advertisements on TV and in ads today, use phycology to enhance purchasing for buyers’. Affective conditioning is the process of exchanging positive emotions from one thing to another. In the essay “What does advertising do?” Art Markman describes this use of marketing most powerful when putting a product next to something consumers already feel very good about, creating those good emotions to be passed along to the product being presented. Perfect Pan Brownie commercial uses this expertise in hopes of buyers' to gain positive feelings about their product due to the surrounding scenery, and sound effects. Sound effects may seem pointless, but throughout the perfect brownie commercial sound effects are used to inhibit the buyer’s mood. Throughout the advertisement sound effects create a favorable vibe to the Perfect Pan product, while adding an uneasy feeling towards the regular pan. Each time the Perfect Brownie Pan was being shown in the commercial, an upbeat music would be surrounding the scene. The background speakers tone would raise and portray so much enthusiasm in response to the product. While the regular pan was being presented in the advertisement, the background speaker would deeper his voice and create a pessimistic tone when describing the average pan. The Perfect Pan commercial uses affective conditioning to advertise their product, due to the enthusiastic tone of the background speaker, and upbeat music. Markman states, “They have paid for the opportunity to slip information to us about what feels good. That information ultimately affects the way we make choices whether we know it or not” (Markman). Affective conditioning is such a strong marketing technique due to consumers having their emotions blindly affected by advertisements. Commercials including the Perfect Brownie Pan can give a buyer an illusion of a better life just based on positive emotions towards an actresses, sound effects or background image in a commercial.
