It is only through therapeutic relationship, a partnership between the practitioner and the patient, can we optimize the patient’s medication experience. Furthermore, therapeutic relationship developed through patient-centeredness also increases the likelihood of the patient adhering to the drug therapy, minimizing drug-related morbidity and mortality associated with medication use.
The future of our healthcare system is moving towards patient centeredness so it is imperative that we built a strong foundation as to what patient-centeredness is? Of all the concepts we learned, this concept struck with me the most because of the book (The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down) we had to read for our pharmaceutical skills discussion. In order to understand the patient and his/her needs in their own words, we need to develop our listening skills. Listening is the foundation of all communication so it is imperative that as health professional, we must develop our listening skills. It is only through listening that we understand our patient’s wants, needs, and expectations. When we incorporate our patient’s wants and needs into their drug therapy, it leads to a therapeutic relationship build on trust thus optimizing patient’s medication experience and medication adherence.
