Having played so many I can relate to just about every one of the stresses that James and Collins (1977) noted, that can affect individuals within a team sport. One in particular that I relate to the most is non-performance to the required standards, and this then for me correlates to concerns about significant others and social evaluation. For example, if I were to be serving in a volleyball game, the ball would be solely in my control. If I were to then serve the ball out of bounds, the point would go to the other team. In this play, I would be particularly anxious about what my coach would say and how my teammates would react. Nothing can stop the power people have when they come together. As we can see through the examples of social media, natural disasters, epidemics, team sports and ecology this paradox has the ability to transcend through many different disciplines. In light of this paradox and the human condition of self-awareness, it is important to be self aware of the connections we are making in this world even if we feel disconnected at times.
