It is not really about winning the championship game or the records you broke; it is about the life skills you learned throughout the entire journey of athletics. Team sports and individual sports both provide life lessons or skills worth knowing later in life. The longevity of sports do not last forever in team sports but athletes that play individual sports such as golf or running can continue playing the rest of their life. It does not matter if you can play that sport forever; it matters what the experiences were from that sport. Team sports provides athletes with the knowledge of being cooperative with others. Being able to cooperate with others is a good skill to have for everything, whether it is job related or having in-laws. Individuals tend to not work well with others; being independent is the way they go. Some may think being an individual is being selfish; not wanting to participate in any group activities. Being independent is not a bad life skill but can be taken the wrong way, as if you are selfish and self-centered. Athletes may adapt to manners from team sports because they do not get away with having a bad attitude or being rude to other people. A Torrington high school volleyball coach once said, “I do not care if you are friends off the court but when you step foot on the court you can fake the smiles because you are all family and you will respect every single girl on the floor, whether you like them or not”.
