As my journey as a Vermilion High School Sailor comes to an end, I cannot help but to be excited to call myself a future Falcon by planning to further my education at Bowling Green State University in the fall of 2017. The experiences that I have endured throughout the last four years at Vermilion High School and in my community have shaped me into the young man I am today. I have participated in the following activities: Varsity Football, Varsity Track and Field, Weightlifting, The Breakfast Club for Weightlifting, Choir, Winter Homecoming Court, Athletic Student Sections, and the Move to Stand Bullying Prevention Club. Through hard work and dedication, I pride myself in successfully balancing many extra-curricular activities on top of maintaining …show more content…
Being apart of a team has had an extremely positive influence on my life and my development as a person. I have learned to be an effective leader, work well under pressure, manage my time, and most importantly, be able to put the team before myself. My participation in football has benefited me more off the field than on it. Not only did athletics allow me to develop lifelong friendships, but I was able to step outside of my comfort zone and meet all kinds of new people. My time as an athlete will always be an invaluable experience for me because I gained memories that will last a lifetime. I have learned that I should not give up when a task seems too hard or undesirable. Athletics has taught me that in times like these, I need to try even harder to push myself to reach my goal. During my senior season, I suffered from a shoulder injury that forced me to miss a significant amount of playing time. However, I did not let this injury force me to miss game time. Instead, this is when my leadership abilities were exhibited the most as I became a mentor and helped coach my team from the sidelines. It is through this experience that I saw a different side to football and began to take on a different outlook on life. A person’s true character shines when hard times arise and I believe that it is my character …show more content…

The most painful part of an ACL tear is not the ligament itself, but the heartbreak that accompanies it. My freshman year of high school, I was homecoming princess, a member of the student council, a volunteer for the special olympics, and the 4a Basketball leading scorer in the state. With great friends and a 4.0, I was the epitome of a successful high school athlete. My world came crumbling down when I tore my every ligament in my right knee, weeks before the state tournament.…

This year has been really special to me because of the amazing opportunity to participate in the Varsity Athletics program. Not only did I receive an overwhelming amount of support and welcoming, but also have learned very valuable lessons from both from my teammates and coaching staff. I’ve better developed many character traits such as honesty and integrity that wouldn’t have been accomplished any other way. These traits are necessary in creating a team bond as it enables the team to support each other even through mistakes, everyone makes them and by realizing these mistakes will only help us develop more positively as individuals it will make it easier then trying to use blame to cover up for these mistakes. This team has also showed me…

After participating in multiple high school sports such as football, basketball, and track & field, I developed a passion to work in sports. The sequence throughout my high school career that really inspired me to participate in sports was my senior year in high school when I placed 4th at the state championships in the men’s high jump competition. That day at the state championships, I was not only inspired by myself, but also the many other star athletes that participated throughout the track meet. Throughout that particular meet, I built relationships with star athletes such as C.J. Spiller who currently plays professional football for the New Orleans Saints, and also Jeffery Demps who plays professional football for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.…

This quote speaks to me as a athlete because I had to control my inner enemy to overcome the other enemy. I also have a similar story as Tony Rom. I have played football for four years including this year, which is relatively short when compared to others, but in that time I have learned more about myself and others than I have doing any other sport or activity. My football experience has been very different when compared to most others that have played the game. I go to a small, Catholic school in Atlanta that places a large emphasis on unity among our small community. This same sense unity carries over to the football team. The vice principle is our head coach, my tenth grade history teacher is a line coach, my brother’s math teacher is another line coach, a classmate of mine is the running back coach, and his father is the defensive coordinator.…

Introduction: The concept of character is not new; however, many college sports programs focus not only on building winning teams, but also building strong character in athletes. For instance, not all college athletes get the chance to play professional; therefore, coaches strive to implement characteristics in their athletes to be successful on and off the field. Why is this prevalent? While it is true that the origin for this phenomenon lies in traditional beliefs that character trumps talent and strategy, more thorough analysis of the issue reveals that strong willed athletes are more likely to succeed in the real world. This is especially true when looking at college sports.…

This was when I realized that sports was my outlet. It was the one place that was mine, where I felt like I could achieve anything; having that taken away from me was terribly hard. I had to decide who I wanted to be, what I wanted to do and if this was God’s calling for my life. My coach allowed me to continue to be a part of the team as a student coach. This was an amazing opportunity; I was able to get to know my coaches and teammates at a much more personal level than I could before; while playing, I cared more about myself than my coaches or teammates.…

The summer before my senior year, I suddenly realized I had in four years, only collected ten volunteer hours out of the sixty required to earn an honors diploma. Quickly, I began scouring the internet and local listings for any possible opportunities which I would be able to earn hours. The perfect opportunity had been right in front of me for all four years, and I hadn’t even realized; Kenston offers a student athletic training program where students are able to shadow the school athletic trainer and learn the basics of athletic training and first aid. I emailed the athletic trainer who I vaguely knew from having been mildly concussed my previous lacrosse season , and asked if I would be able to join in volunteering during the football…
