In the past four years, I have had many experiences with family, friends and an extreme amount of clubs, activities, and home life occasions I am involved in. But in all honesty sports have taught me a lot about people, life and even myself. I have been a part of many teams in my lifetime and played several abstract sports, but at Summit Academy High School the sports are very unique. There are mixed attitudes towards the teams, players and coaches that you would not see at any other school. But I like to call them obstacles and challenges. As an athlete, I have never been afraid of a challenge. I have always been able to go at my problems head-on; this is also something I learned from Summit Academy sports and will definitely help in my next step into the real world and in the far future.

The very first sport I was a part of at Summit Academy was varsity softball. I was a freshman and had a lot to prove; not only was I the youngest of the group but I didn’t have a definite spot on the

If someone told the middle school me that I was going to lead the basketball team as a captain for three years in a row I would’ve never believed them. But after living through it, I am more than grateful that it got to be me. After having three different coaches, winning the MVP award all three years, and having every girl on the team look up to me by my senior year, it has truly been a blessing and I cannot fathom that it has come to an end. Not that I had to carry the team, but I wanted to carry the team for me. I did this because I knew that was the only way that any of the girls would start trusting each other. In my sophomore year we were not a great team, but by the end of my senior year we were doing great and I don’t expect any less of the team that is coming in next year. I loved leading this team and I would do it all over

In high school, I have never been involved with athletics as much as I had wished. I did not much affinity towards our sports teams either. Athletics seemed more of a requirement and a hassle rather than something that had a lot of value in it. At Syracuse, I would want to become someone who doesn’t see sports in that light. I want to be involved with sports at the university, both playing and cheering, and have a school and sports teams that I can feel vast amounts of pride for, even after I become an alumni.…

Not only did I receive an overwhelming amount of support and welcoming, but also have learned very valuable lessons from both from my teammates and coaching staff. These traits are necessary in creating a team bond as it enables the team to support each other even through mistakes, everyone makes them and by realizing these mistakes will only help us develop more positively as individuals it will make it easier then trying to use blame to cover up for these mistakes. Over the four years I played volleyball, the sport taught me that leading the team would lead to success. Our team needed a voice to guide the team, and being that voice taught me so much. Youth athletics has played a massive role in shaping my character. Whether it be learning the value of community or stress management, these activities have attributed or further developed more characteristics present in me than all other experiences I have combined. Before joining the Plantation Athletic League, I had a very limited understanding of what a community is or is supposed to be. As I progressed through different sports with peers, I had formed something completely new to me: a bond, friendship. It became apparent to me that life is not just about you or how successful you are at any particular activity or event, but rather how we can become successful.…

As a senior captain, I was given the opportunity to visit the local elementary and middle schools throughout the year to coach and mentor girls that wanted to play basketball in high school. It occurred to me that I had been in their shoes not too long before. I remembered how much I admired the varsity team when I was a younger and how I would have done anything to be just like them. At this point, I realized that though it was still important to me to win games and advance towards the goal of a state title, I had been given the chance to be an example for these girls just as the previous varsity team had been for me; and that is what really…

Ironically, the most important lesson I have learned is that there is more to life than sports. Throughout my adolescence, athletics seemed like the only way to make it out of the environment I grew up in. Athletics has given me the opportunity to pursue a career in veterinary medicine — something I always had an interest in, but never thought I would be able to do. I also became a leader to my teammates who grew up in a similar environment as mine. As I excelled on both the field and in the classroom, I showed my teammates that there are more routes to success than professional sports.…
