The Wheel of Wellness was developed by Sweeney and Witmer. It was the first model of wellness established in counseling. “The wheel is a theoretical model which emerged from reviews of cross-disciplinary studies which the authors sought to identify empirical correlates of health, quality of life, and longevity. Adlerian Individual Psychology provides the organizing principle underlying this model” (Myers & Sweeney, 2007). Spirituality sits in the center of the wheel and is the most vital characteristic of wellness in the final wheel model. The ideas of spirituality incorporates religious or spiritual practices and beliefs and having a logical meaning of life. There are 12 spokes surrounding the center that helps an individual regulate or direct the self in responding to Adlerian life task of work and leisure, friendship, and love. The authors also develop The Wellness Evaluation of Lifestyle Inventory (WEL) which was based off the Wheel of Wellness. WEL was developed to evaluate the various components in the model, but the factor structure was difficult to define and the significance of spirituality was not
