The effective costumes provide character information even before the characters speak. Some of the questions that the costumes successfully answered are “Is the character female or male?” “How old is the character?” “What kind of personality does the character have?” and “Is the character of high or low status in society?” Audience members need to distinguish between classes and the individuals apart and the costume designer successfully accomplished this task. The costumes did seem appropriate to the needs of the production because the characters silhouette immediately speaks to the World War I era. As soon as I seen Gwendolyn and James Joyce on stage I knew based on the costumes that they were wearing that the production was set in a European country. I also knew that the production was set in a European country because the characters were speaking Russian. I later found out that the play was set in Switzerland and the costumes are appropriate for the setting of the production. The costumes the actors were wearing are clothes that people living in Switzerland would wear during World War I. For example, with Henry Carr’s portrayal in the production the costume designer did a great job “dressing-up” the actor, Christopher Sheard. I remember seeing several piles of books because the setting of the play is in the Zurich Public Library. There was a moment in the play in which Cecily and Carr are dancing in one of the platforms and Cecily kicks a book with her foot and it drops to the floor. Another memorable aspect of staging within the production were the props, such as the muffin holder, the tea set, and the table. These props are memorable because there is a scene were Carr and Tzara are eating muffins. The tea set is memorable to me because I was seating in the front row and I remember that when Bennet was serving tea there was actual tea or water coming out from the pot.
