Last Thursday night, I attended Indiana Wesleyan University’s production of The Pirates of Penzance. This is a romantic comedy that is performed as an opera. This show was first created during the Victorian Age and intends to bring you back to this time period. The show was written by Sir WS Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan in the year of 1879. The Pirates of Penzance was first produced in the Fifth Avenue Theater in New York City on December 31, 1879. The show portrays the theme of moral duty. This theme is portrayed to show the values that people in the society had at the time of the reign of Queen Victoria. Duty was something that was taken very serious in the show and had an impact for the ending of the opera. It was reproduced by the Indiana Wesleyan University Theatre and was directed by Dr. Keith Brautigam and Dr. Lisa Dawson and was performed by Indiana Wesleyan students.

The costumes and the back design all looked amazing. The background and the rocks made me feel as if I were near a beach. The dresses of the daughter contributed to my sense feeling as if I were in the Victorian Age. The designers had to put a lot of time into the set up of the house and I admire all the hard work they put in. The acting played an important part to the experience I had because when the actors were being funny, it made me laugh and made the time more enjoyable. The orchestra did a fantastic job with the music and I was amazed at the girl who performed the flute at the very beginning. The director was trying to allow the audience to appreciate the fondness of a British comedy by delivering it correctly. This production took months of preparation by all of the production staff and performers and the directors hoped that the hard work would over take every
