When reading The Odyssey, most think of the main character, Odysseus, as a true and epic hero on his adventures. In reality, Odysseus is not as much of a hero as his made out to be. His decisions are cowardly and unwise of him to make. The Greek gods do most of the work during his venture to Ithaca. Plus, Odysseus’ motives are almost entirely for his own self gain. The Odyssey is not a tale about heroism, but about a man who simply is trying to go back home. Odysseus is thought to be a wise man who is brave in the face of danger. His actions say otherwise. From the very beginning, he shows how his strong desire not have to go into war by pretending to be a mad man to get out of it. Heroes can and are scared at times, but they push through with courage. Odysseus does manage to get past some evil creatures, but he does not save many lives on his long quest. In the Trojan war, he does aid in its end, which saved tons of lives in the process. Though this act wasn’t solely his doing. Even if you give him that credit, after the war, he doesn’t help anyone else. When he is told of the prophecy that says that he will be the lone survivor of him and his men, he does nothing to stop it from coming true. He did not notify the crew because he wanted their help to reach home. If he had spoken to the men about it, the members could choose if returning home was worth the risk instead of dooming them all. Odysseus’ men did eat the cattle of Helios but it was Odysseus’ job as a leader to prevent that from happening. He sleeps while his crew feasts just to wake up and yell out “‘O Father Zeus and gods in bliss forever, you made me sleep away this day of mischief!’” Homer (Book 12). A good sum of of his men died for reasons that were not their fault in the slightest. The crew trusted and believed in their leader’s actions, and that got them

Throughout the story Odysseus does not take actions when his men are being killed or eaten so that he can live, like he did in the giant’s cave, when Scylla attacked and when Zeus struck them with a lightning bolt and the evidence that proves Odysseus takes these actions to protect himself reads, “why not/ take these cheeses, get them stowed, come back, / throw open all pens, and make a run for it? / We’ll drive the kids and lambs aboard. Odysseus has protected his family and the people who stand with him in the ways he knows best, so I believe that in the Odyssey by Homer that the main character Odysseus is a hero even though he had lost his men to the gods and monsters he came in contact with and had lied to his family he had to protect the people he loved from others that want to hurt him thought his loved ones. Odysseus is a hero in my view from the way that he tricks the Cyclops in to believing that his name is Nohbdy instead if Odysseus so when he and his men escape the Cyclops cannot tell who had been there. The reason Odysseus told the Cyclops that his name was Nohbdy was that he knew that if someone would have asked the cyclops who had tricked him and they could be one that would not know that he was alive and might be one of his enemy’s. When he was planning a way to escape eight of his men were eaten by the cyclops from the long wait from the making of the plain but it was one of the sacrifices he had to make for a better out come from them…

Although modern scholars have argued that Odysseus was a hero, closer examination of the greek legend shows that Odysseus was not a hero, because he was ungrateful to the gods, he cheated on his wife, and he returned to Ithaka without any men. Odysseus, King of Ithaka, was called upon to fight in the Trojan War. At first, he was averse to the idea of going to war, because his son, Telemachus, had been born days before. Eventually, he sailed to Troy, with the best of his men, and fought bravely against the Trojans for ten years. When he thought that surrender was inevitable, he came up with the brilliant idea of the Trojan Horse, and the war was won.…

The Odyssey is a book about the travels of a man who is trying to find his way back home after being suspended from land by Poseidon, the greek god of the sea. He goes on lots of travels, like Polyphemus, Calypso and her island, the sirens, and finally getting back to his wife, the reason he’s trying to get home. Although many qualities of a good hero are; having inhuman strength or ability, being selfless, or one who shows great courage, I would have to disagree that Odysseus shows those qualities. This is because he has no enlarged strength or ability.…

Odysseus shows his bravery in many of his actions and also through his dialogue. In “The Land of the Dead,” Odysseus travels to the underworld, so he can receive advice for the prophet, Tiresias. In particular, the text says “Then I addressed the blurred and breathless dead, vowing to slaughter my best heifer for them” (11.584-85). This quote refers to when Odysseus was sacrificing a black lamb and an ewe, so he could speak to the dead spirits. This piece of evidence shows that Odysseus is brave because he journeys to the underworld and talks to a dead man, just so he can get information about his future travel home.…
