Brave, Smart, or Lucky?
(A review of the great epic hero Odysseus)
Throughout the span of literary history there have many different types of epic heroes and villains. An epic hero is essentially one that undergoes a series of different trials and or experiences. Most of the time an epic hero will have to endure some type of epic journey and epic tragedy. In my opinion, one of the best examples of an epic hero can be found in the story of Odysseus. Odysseus like most epic heroes has a complicated background and is one that struggles to find his purpose in life. It is no doubt that while reading such epic poems as The Odyssey, one may begin to question just how possible it was that the hero made it through every single trial that came their way. The truth is, in real life, if one of us were to have to endure the challenges that Odysseus did, we probably wouldn’t be able to make it. Even the Greeks with all of their epic poems, acknowledged the fact that a lot of what happened to the heroes was due to some kind of luck. Even if they may not have necessarily called it luck, but instead divine intuition, we can think of them as being the same thing. In my opinion, luck is something that we all have in one way or another; however I do not think that it is the only reason that some people are able to be so successful. No matter the situation, or amount of luck, there are always other elements that will play into one’s success. For Odysseus in particular we see how even though he clearly falls under the first two characterizations, bravery and intelligence, he still possess just a tad bit of luck. Throughout The Odysseus, I believe that his luck comes in many different forms and is displayed in his journey in many different ways. Throughout this epic journey and his challenges we can better just how all of these ideals come to light. There are countless experiences in which Odysseus must exercise a form of brave, even if he is doing it subconsciously. His intelligence is truly like no other epic hero, and is often what he known for in scholarly terms. He always rises to occasion, by thinking of a way to get out of his current predicament. Like most of us, it should come as no surprise that Odysseus is also an individual with a great amount of luck. He always seems to be the survivor of every great tragedy, even with regarding his bravery and intelligence. Throughout literature there are many different examples of epic heroes, and some are more important than others. After analyzing The Odyssey, it has become blatantly clear to me that Odysseus is one of the most influential epic heroes of the Greek poems. There is no doubt in my mind that Odysseus truly did complete a daunting mission/journey while experiencing a significant growth of self along the way, and it was largely due to his bravery, intelligence, and just a little bit of
