HIPAA and procedures, if we are lucky and can track down a family member the advantages of using traditional communication far out weight the disadvantages. The disadvantage is always in the form of how the communication is sent out. As with email, text messages and pamphlets, because of the PHI rule; computer networks are required to be secure. To do this effectively safeguards must always be in place, for example virus protection and firewalls. This keeps viruses with information you don’t want, cyber hackers, basically diverting anyone who would seize emails or texts.
However, there will come a point when as a team we the health care providers realize that tracking down a patient’s family is impossible the next step is social media. Under the HIPAA guidelines there are strict rules for the patient’s safety. However, under HIPAA PHI can be published to law enforcement and social media under individual circumstance; finding a missing person or family member would be included.
“Some health care organizations offer opportunities for patient advocates who represent patient interests and serve as liaisons between patients and health care providers. Patient advocates may be hired by the patient directly, but most are employed by the hospitals” (Greene, 1997; Maleskey, 1984).
