Therefore, I began my training at the Atlantic Street Center and at the completion of my internship I accepted a part-time position. Although my position with the Atlantic Street Center was not directly related to healthcare, it was the catalyst that led me to decide on a career in management. As a Youth Development leader I gained experience that would fit in any managerial role. My responsibilities with Atlantic Street included co-supervising interns and training them to serve as future youth leaders. I facilitated a weekly boys group, developed and implemented youth programs to meet program objectives, organized community field trips and projects for the youth. In addition, I have learned, in this process that you have to keep learning, if you’re going to advance. Therefore, I am always seeking opportunities to increase my knowledge; hence, why I enrolled in a leadership development series that will be beneficial as I make this transition to a management role.
The leadership development course is a seven-month course that teaches such things as accountability, staff development, conflict management, teamwork, how to develop a vision for the department and/or organization, and finances. This course will be completed in January of 2017.
My career in health care service delivery spans over 20 years and has allowed me to grow in many areas. I became interested in administration, not because it was a natural progression to the next level. A teacher once told me that I should strive to be a change agent in whatever I do.
