Chace begin his article "A Question Of Honor: Cheating On Campus Undermines The Reputation Of Our Universities And The Value Of Their Degrees. Now Is The Time For Students Themselves To Stop It. (Cover Story) with a striking statement that the nation’s colleges and university students are studying, reading and learning less. Chace supports the statement by quoting and paraphrasing sociologists Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa as the present evidence that the American higher education system is failing a large portion of the students. On the same parallel President Obama stated “ If you can’t stop the tuition from going up,the funding you get from taxpayers will go down.” Higher education can’t be a luxury-- it is an economic imperative that every family in America should be able to afford” (Chace). Higher education should not be a challenge to obtain. Though many current students or incoming student would say otherwise. “ According to the Pew Research Center, most American citizens say that higher education fails to provide good value for the money students and their families spend.” At some point during the college career students come across writing courses with an immense amount of topics. The requirements for the written works does not have a well laid out plan only that professors want original work. “ The opportunity to be truly original has gotten rarer through the eons.”The reason that originality has become extinct is because the topics that are being chosen in these higher educational Institutes are repetitive the ideas and ideals have all been spoken for. Thus making it harder for students to come up with original ideas and this is one of the reasons that plagiarism occurs (Chace). In 1964 the first comprehensive study of cheating at colleges and universities found that Seventy five percent of the students engaged in academic dishonesty. By 2001 academic dishonesty dramatically had risen within the last thirty years. Over several decades American colleges and universities conducted surveys which displayed their academic dishonesty continued to grow and become more rapid. “Students cheat for many reasons, some of them even doing so without malignant intent either because they don't understand the rules of academic honesty or confused by the assignment.” In recent studies of plagiarism it seems that the focus has shifted from the percentage of those who plagiarize ; to the reasons to why students plagiarize with this new perspective on plagiarism maybe there can be a way to lessen plagiarism at universities and colleges (Chace). Plagiarism on an academic level is a violation of social acceptability. …show more content…
It is not necessarily a conceivable crime due to the fact that the works that are being used without being credited to the original authors is being done without their knowledge because the students work will not be published. Students should not be the only one accountable for ethical standards. Institutions should have equal ethical standards that are constantly enforced. “But if the institute's themselves exhibit question electrical standards leaving a trail of shoddy compromise, corner-cutting, and breaches of trust those students come to understand that honor is only a word and not the practice.(Chace)” The institutions should not be held accountable for student academic dishonesty. student should be able to self govern themselves and take responsibility. student should have the authority to monitor the ethical behavior of themselves and their classmates. Should students take the pattern a responsibility from classroom to classroom the nation's colleges and universities would surely benefit in establishing a consensual agreement that interests essential virtue of honorable Behavior in an academic standing (Chace). Emma Gross’s article addresses similar issues of plagiarism. Gross’s evidence differences somewhat from her Colleague. in her article she discussed the values of shift Theory. Shift Theory being
