For numerous academic institutions, honor codes are the foundations that strive to mitigate surreptitious, unfair actions. From cheating to plagiarizing, these sets of code execute a block of repercussions that insists on fostering integrity. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of honor systems is a highly controversial issue; proponents proclaim that these rules do cultivate truthfulness, while opponents highlight the ineffective, authoritarian consequences of these honor codes. Honor codes may appear consequential in preventing immoral actions, but these protocols constitute vastly more ramifications than benefits. Thus, my school should abolish its honor system.

The reasoning appears rational: protocols endeavor to mitigate unfair practices among students. Nonetheless, this situation is too idealistic in comparison to the reality of academic institutions. In a survey from a student honor council in the academic years, 2002 to 2008, the Student population demonstrated more apathy than consideration. From their analysis, forty percent of students “have violated the honor code and [have] not been caught.” (Source E). Despite being a minority, a forty percent failure rate of the honor code does not cultivate integrity; students still commit to these unfair actions, and, as a result, students like Alyssa Vangelli should not believe in the integrity of fellow peers. It is quite evident that trust among students cannot prosper when students persist to shatter their school’s honor code. Notwithstanding this, these students, in a super-majority of eighty-eight percent, agree that “a violation of the honor code” would reasonably justify “failure on the assignment” (Source E). …show more content…
For example, the University of Virginia expects students to write an honor statement “on every test in every class” to never “lie, cheat, or steal”, which is a component of its “well defined and policed” honor codes. However, plagiarism persists to be a complication where peers investigated “157 students...in the largest cheating scandal in memory.” (Source D). Even with the ominous honor protocols in position, this university could not alleviate this issue that countless students swore in their honor statement. The scandal straightforwardly exhibits that non-integral acts will cultivate despite the rigorous honor codes since these protocols, such as the statement, solely remind students to not perform illicit actions while failing to actually distill a lasting impact on students. The fact that a plagiarism scandal cultivates in an institution that persistently impales students with honorary statements exhibits the catastrophic flaws of these rules. These protocols are merely a glimpse in a student’s memory since the pressure impaled from these tests swiftly defeats the agreement to integrity, which solely recall students for a few
