Negative Effects Of Texting And Driving

Everywhere you look, cellphones are present--maybe too much. Teens depend greatly on them for things like studying, communication, entertainment and staying connected. For some people, being without their phone leaves them lost and irritated, since they are cut off the electronic social spectrum.Cell phones have many affects on teens, some positive, such as study help, and quick communication with parents, while other effects are negative, such as texting and driving.
One cause of the increased use of cellphones in teens is the rise in texting and driving. Texting while behind the wheel is very dangerous, not just for the driver, but for everyone else on the road. In 2011, 23 percent of auto collisions involved cell phones. This adds up to over 1.3 million crashes annually. 60 percent of Americans admit to risky driving, and 34 percent of teens admit to texting and driving (“Texting and Driving”).

Texting and driving makes a crash 23 times more likely. A study has shown that texting while driving has accounted for 16,141 lives from 2001 to 2007. ()Those numbers have since grown along with the increased number of cell phone owners. There are alternates to texting and driving, if you get a text message and you think it’s urgent--have your co-pilot read it off to you and text your reply. If you are alone, either wait until you reach your destination, or pull over in order to read and reply; these same rules apply with calling as well.
