I recall the day so clearly, impatiently waiting in the doctor’s office. Nothing was wrong with me; I was supposed to be at the rink for hockey practice or so I thought. Instead I was waiting to be called into a room. Little did I know I was about to hear those three dreaded words, the words no person ever wants to hear ‘You have cancer’. Everything around me stopped for a brief second while I sat trying to comprehend what was happening. My mother was crying, the doctor was talking and I just sat, unsure of how to react. I knew from that moment on I was about to face the biggest fight of my life.
Hockey is and always has been an integral part of my life. I grew up in a small town where as soon as children learned to walk, the skates were strapped on and you learned the game. I started out playing young and was fortunate enough to move away from home at the young age of 14 to play

There was pain, and mouth sores, hair loss, nausea, vomiting and much more. However, I like to consider myself lucky. The nurses who cared for me were incredible. Even on my worst days, my room instantly filled with energy when they walked in. It is because of those nurses that I chose to pursue a career in nursing. I am currently going into my fourth year of the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program through the University of Regina. Upon completion of the course I hope to work on a pediatric oncology unit. I want to leave a lasting impression on children and families who are enduring the same horrific experience I did. Lastly, I want to raise awareness for this scholarship, in hopes that more individuals who may not have previously had the opportunity to attend a post-secondary institution will pursue their dreams. It is important to hold onto goals and dreams during their treatments, as it is a beacon of light at the end of a dark tunnel. I want to be a role model for these children just as my nurses were for

"One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do,"this quote by Henry Ford reconnects when it comes to facing something you're afraid of; our fears. When we get over fears, we realize only then that we had the courage before to do that something we were afraid of doing. One time I was afraid was when I started ice skating. I was at a party for my younger sister's friend at an ice ring.…

My domination of easily breezing by my neighbors in street hockey and always ranked at the top of stat sheets for scoring in recreational hockey, abruptly ended when I joined my first competitive travel hockey team. My first game exemplified the setbacks my fear imposed on my team when I frighteningly moved out of the way of an enormous player to grant him a free pass to the net in which he scored the game winning goal. Shamefully looking at me as if I were an ally of the other team, I became alienated after my team after they began the tradition of…

It was my last high school game and we had made it to the play-offs. Winning this would mean making it one step closer to the High School Indoor Field Hockey Championship and playing another game. I knew that I had to play at the highest level I could to win, which meant excellent execution and communication with my team. Once the whistle blew and the clock was started, everything was on the move from the ball to the goalie to the fans.…

It was a chilly February day and a bunch of boys and I were discussing playing a game of road hockey after school. We were all sitting around in our 6th-grade science class talking about who should we invite to this big extravagant hockey game. We talked about all the details; such as when the game is, who’s invited and where would we be playing. We all decided on a 3:30 at Davids house and that we would have 9 of us play. By now we were all excited about playing the game and we all just had to survive the school day.…

As a child, I was extremely active and participated in many sports, however, there is no question that my main source of physical activity was hockey. Like many other children from my community in Kingston, hockey has been a true passion of mine for as long as I can remember. My father was the one who introduced hockey into my life at a young age, as he did for my older brother Andrew as well. Growing up, my father would dedicate many winter days and nights building and maintaining an outdoor rink in our backyard. The three of us would spend countless hours back there after school and on weekends throughout the winter.…

Since I was five years old, hockey has been one of the most important communities in my life. For many people in this community, this means being a player, but I choose to find new opportunities to make it more than just a game. Since I was in kindergarten, I have skated with diverse groups of people from all over Southeast Michigan. I still play in the spring in a house league with players from outside my high school.…

It was a Saturday afternoon in December and frighteningly cold out. Becca had gone to the ice rink to watch Ashley skate. Sitting on the bleachers, freezing, wishing her best friend was a gymnast or even a pianist, she reached up and pulled her hat over her ears. She peered through the glass wall, out to the ice, and quickly forgot about her frozen extremities. Ashley’s coach stood scrutinizing her as she sped across the ice, jumped high in the air, spun around into a blur of beautiful colors and landed effortlessly, looking like she hadn’t even taken a breath.…

A smile spread across my face. I had dreamt of this moment so long that it was surreal to experience it.
