My personal values

Values are those things that are important, meaningful and valued by an individual, a group of people, or an organization. Whether we are aware of them or not, every individual has his or her core set of values, which consist of many different kinds of values. Each individual’s value system is different from one another because individual’s values are built up through one’s life experience, environment, and family background. Values are important to us because they reflect our personal moral standards, shape our behavior, and guide us through long life journeys. If a shopkeeper has integrity, he or she will hold the value of honest and fairness, and thus will not overcharge the customer.
It is important we hold integrity in either academic or business world. For example, we as students should hold academic integrity by not cheating in exams, not stealing or copying others’ ideas in writing without giving credits to them. In the business world, integrity means that an organization should be honest with its customers, investors, and other stakeholders; it should play fairly in market place. The good thing is integrity is something anyone can choose to have, rather than something that only some people are born with. As long as a person values integrity, he or she can learn to have integrity and act honestly, truthfully, and fairly in most situations.
Third, I highly value education. Many people see education as a means for us to get a good job. For me, education means more than just obtaining knowledge for a better career; it actually helps people become cultivated, less egocentric, and more tolerant. Again, according to the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham, an action is right if and only if it brings about at least as net happiness as any other action the agent could have performed. Whereas scientific and technologic education improves our life through innovation and advanced technology, and humanistic education help us live in richer lives.
